Album Notes
"This is the definitive Haitian "World Beat" album...On top of a strong 'racine' [roots] bed....are layers of zouk, beguine, Cuba, Latin America and Brazil...the vocal range and intonation emit a sensual warmth suggestive of the 'whiskey' tinged 'velvet fog' quality attributed to Mel Torme along with a discernable touch of Edith Piaf."
-The Haitian Times, June 26/July 4, 2000

"Gorgeous new Emeline Michel CD is worth the search...she layers piano, percussion instruments such as congas, bongos and maracas, and violin, but they don't clash. Instead she leaves welcome space to breath...Michel's songs merge native Haitian compas and rara with jazz, pop, bossa nova and samba elements and her production is near flawless."
-Miami Herald, July 21, 2000

"Cordes et Âme by the reigning queen of Haitian song...marks a return to roots...almost angelic in its beauty".
-Beat Magazine, Vol.19#3 2000

"every minute of [Cordes et Ame] ... was worth the wait... a wonderful combination of [Emeline's] soothing, but powerful, nuanced and accurate voice grafted on traditional instruments like the conga, the maraca, the banjo.... You derive equal pleasure whether listening or dancing to the tunes...a relaxing, thoughtful, and lyrical album, which makes you reminisce."
-Windows on Haiti, June 2000

CORDES ET AME was awarded Haiti's "Musique En Folie" awards for Best Haitian Album and Best Production for the year 2000.

She is the reigning queen of Haitian song. A captivating performer, versatile vocalist, accomplished dancer, songwriter and producer. She has recorded and appeared on concert stages throughout the Caribbean, Europe, North & South America, and Africa for the past 15 years. Singing both in French and Haitian Creole, her seven CDs, Douvanjou ka leve (May the Sun Rise), Pa gen manti nan sa (There's No Doubt), Rhum & Flamme (Rum & Flame), Tout Mon Temps (All My Time), The Very Best, Ban'm pase (Let Me Pass), and Cordes et Ame (Strings and Soul) have catapulted her to international acclaim.

Emeline is beloved by Haitians for combining traditional rhythms with social, political and inspirational content, and is celebrated as one of the leading songwriters in the Haitian Creole language.

Emeline's latest CD Cordes et Ame is a ground-breaking recording for a Caribbean artist. A sophisticated song-cycle centered around the theme of perseverance, the CD features the sound of voice & acoustic guitar bathed in the ancient and modern rhythms of Haiti.

The sounds, the rythms everything about this CD make me fall
in love with the Haitian music. It`s an art of its own.I love

mwen gen foli damou
I love this song and "respekte'n" too. I really bought this cd for those two ones and I don't regret my choice. I found her, her voice and her songs warm, sensual, sensitive, creative, full of energy and sincere. as always...."la créole est fière... li pap pran prière.. ton pti coeur frivole pourrait griller dans sa casserole..."

Just Beautiful!
I gave her five stars because of the following songs: Fo m ale, mwen pare, Pe l'Eternel and moso manman... Beautiful voice, excellent! Great Job!!!

As a member of the Haitian diaspora I have longed to hear the sound of my native land. In her CD, Emeline captures the tempo, the beauty, the sensuality and yes, even the desperation that continues to ravage this country and its people. Her rendition of MWEN PARE encapsulates the essence of her artistry, addressing the human condition reminiscent of Edith Piaf.

Excellent listening therapy for the musically inclined female artists. Omega
This is my first time ever listening to Emeline .Found her by chance over the web at www.SNWMF.com . I am also of a caribbean island but do not understand frence/creole, so I was forced to listen to her voical abilities and talents. Very, very captivating. I too am in the diaspora and her voice draws me to AFRICA. Omega chants.

beautiful, mesmerizing, thought-provoking lyrics...
Emeline's latest work of art is an absolute masterpiece. She has the most beautiful voice, that takes the listener to a whole new place! She sings a prayer for peace in her country, Haiti, in "Pe Letenel." "Moso Manman" is a tribute to all mothers. "Respekte N," tells people to respect WOMEN! "Foli Da Mou,(a straight jazz song), "Matelo," "Shane", and "Mwen Pare" are songs of love and also heartbreak. She can sing the highest note, or music to make you dance. This album has huge samba influences. If you're into Brazilian music, you'll probably love this! I'm a fan who is very anxious for what she will put out next!

great CD
What a wonderful collection! Her voice is warm, strong all across her range, especially interesting in some low notes you don't get with a lot of female singers. "Fo m ale" starts out in French, the emigrée longing for her homeland; then changes to Creole - she's going home. We also love "Pè letènèl", a prayer for Haiti especially poignant right now; "Respekte n", "Moso manman", "Viejo", and the traditional Haitian tunes. You'll have your own favorites. We're really happy with this one!
