Album Notes
Hailing from the historic fishing town of Gloucester, Massachusetts, Fiddler & Folksinger Emerald Rae is both a small-town girl steeped in cherished traditions and a world-class artist breaking new ground with her sophisticated approach to rhythmic and percussive fiddling. Her direct and intimate style of singing infuses her songs with a powerful immediacy while her extraordinary chops transform the fiddle into anything from bagpipes to flamenco or electric guitar, slap bass or ukulele. Her voice, alternately high and honeyed then gutsy and soulful, delivers a vocal range that encompasses both wind and sea, animal and etheric.

A degree in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music in Boston gave her the freedom to cast a wide net in her fiddle tunes and songwriting. Her eclecticism is born of her insatiable curiosity and her twenty-year career as a powerhouse dance fiddler. In 2013, she released “If Only I Could Fly”, a solo album of original and traditional songs and tunes featuring her prowess on fiddle, vocals, guitar and the Crwth [an ancient Welsh fiddle, pronounced “krooth”], and toured as a solo act from the Canadian Maritimes to Shanghai. In the spring of 2017 came the single and video “Blackbird [trad.]”, a droning, groove-heavy version of the traditional Scottish Ballad accompanied by her signature robust fiddling and a laid back djembe.

Her self-titled 2018 album "Emerald Rae" zeros in on the synergy of voice and fiddle.  The scope of vision, ingenuity and originality in this project reveals her depth and breadth as an artist. Her take on a sea shanty, “Deep Salt Sea” kicks off the record with edgy soundscapes, “Lonely Road” and “When the Silvery Moon Comes Out to Play” drive with angsty power chords, “Inkwell” paints an intimate portrait of an awkward bookworm, “Worlds Away” shouts from the rooftops about income inequality with foot percussion and a wailing old-timey fiddle. Each song is a homespun vignette that will take you on a journey and leave you spellbound.
