Album Notes
Let Jazzgrass introduce you to an unusual blend of jazz and bluegrass instruments in surprising yet delightful combinations. A cello plays duet with the mandolin, a trumpet and trombone horn section backs up a banjo. The saxophone and guitar rip out smooth and engaging solos. The tempo ranges from upbeat stomping to mellow swing. The improvisations in these tunes catch the expression of free spirit.

This album is dedicated to the memory of Uncle Walter, jazz trumpeter, bluegrass guitarist and Harvard anthropologist. We recorded his trumpet tracks in late 2002 and early 2003 at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts for Lakestorm, Scatwalker, Vent de Mer, Last Night, and the Alpine Gypsy Rag. Uncle Walter was one of my earliest musical influences and he continued to inspire me throughout the years to appreciate improvisation and soloing over diverse musical structures and genres. He was enthralled by technology, though had not caught up entirely with digital audio editing. Walter was delighted to find that we could locate a "brown note" in his solo, and pitch shift it to it's intended tone. Being most accustomed to recording "live" New Orleans style jazz, he was also thrilled to work on a project with sax and trombone players from Switzerland, and a cellist from CT, each recording in their own location! Although he would have loved to have heard the final mixes, he took great joy in adding his trumpet and hearing some of the early versions of these tunes. Eric Miller

Gem of the genre
Really enjoyable jazz tunes by Eric Miller in a bluegrass style execution. Virtuoso musicians create a very special blend of creative solo improvisations and well-synched multi-instrument phrases. If you like this genre, this CD is highly recommended - it is outstanding instrumentally and is a guaranteed delight!

JazzGrass is a one of a kind sound
I've been waiting for this CD to be released for a while now and I must say it was worth the wait! The music on this disc is an eclectic blend of both styles and instrumentation that is sovery unique! Right out of the gate, the first track "JazzGrass Stomp" sets a soulful mood and an attitude of exploration. This acoustic blue grass vibe contains sounds not usually associated with bluegrass music...like amazing cello playing and vocals that include Indian Solkatu syllables--which are sung with a passionate rhythmic intensity. The rest of the CD takes the listener on a journey through jazz compositions, and improvisations that draw upon so many styles of music--from swing to funk to flamenco! What I love the most about JAZZGRASS is how band leader and composer Eric Miller blends so many influences while paying respect to each of the traditions. You can hear that he loves every one of these styles....In the "Alpine Gypsy rag", one can hear the New Orleans vibe. The same could be said of the Appalachian sound of "Jazz Grass Wander"...Miller displays some killer blue grass picking on this tune. The CD JAZZGRASS is an that features an orchestra many talented musicians and tunes with some real substance. Bravo!
