Careless Rhapsody: The Heart of Lorenz Hart

by Eric Michael Gillett

"An intimate self-portrait of a man in the thrall of show business dreams, for whom popular standards are platforms for unguarded confessions" is the way the NY Times describes this artist and it is never more apparent than in his approach to Lorenz Hart

Album Notes
"An intimate self-portrait of a man in the thrall of show business dreams, for whom popular standards are platforms for unguarded confessions." NY Times is just one of the ways that Eric Michael Gillett's vocals have been described. Here, this award-winning vocalist wraps himself around the timeless lyrics of one of the most romantic, yet 'unlucky in love' lyricists of the 20th century. With this CD, Lorenz Hart's lyrics are heard in all their glory, swinging one moment and breaking hearts the next.

Renowned songwriter Amanda McBroom ("The Rose") says, "I love Lorenz Hart. I just love him. And knowing that Eric Michael Gillett is singing Hart's lyrics seems utterly perfect. Eric Michael has the heart, God knows he's got the VOICE. And, best of all, he understands a lyric as well as anyone singing today. Eric Michael Gillett and Lorenz Hart are the perfect couple!"

A wonderful CD
To paraphrase a review of a novel that I once read, "Listen to it and laugh . Listen to it and cry. Listen to it and be glad you are human. This is a wonderful CD ; a beautiful performance of Lorenz Hart's songs in all their comic, romantic and tragic beauty. Gillett is a consummate artist.

Stunning and moving performance
A friend introduced me to this album yesterday and I haven't stopped listening to it since I downloaded it. Mr. Gillett is the kind of talent who sings in a fashion that touches your heart and makes you think. Lorenzo Hart's music is wonderful and Mr. Gillett demonstrates that he not only understands the man's music, but the man himself. I highly recommend it, especially to those of us who love musical theatre.

For winter - and summer - nights
I love this album. A selection of melancholic songs - but this voice refuses to give up hope. It reminds you of places you almost forgot about. It silences the noises in your heart for a while. Perfect for every season, in a year and in a lifetime.

I've had the pleasure of being in the audience for a live show by Mr. Gillett, and found myself mesmerized. Listening to this CD brought that experience back for me. It includes some of my favorite Lorenz Hart songs, and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing them in a whole new way, as well as some gems I wasn't as familiar with, but now love. One of the qualities I've always admired about this artist, in addition to his gorgeous voice, is his mastery of lyric and ability to convey and communicate that to an audience so beautifully. It's one thing to conjure up that kind of magic in a live performance, but to be able to make that same kind of intimate connection with a listener through as recording, is a very special quality. This is a beautiful CD and a glorious performance.

I feel in love with this album!
The triumph of love everlasting is celebrated in this gorgeous album. Share it with the one you love this very special weekend!

Spare and taut, then liquid and sweeping, the intimate collection Careless Rhapsody: the Heart of Lorenz Hart captures and refines the intensity of Eric Michael Gillett’s thrilling live performances of these songs, all with lyrics by Hart and most with music by Richard Rodgers. Hart is recalled as both a romantic wit and a tragic figure, and while Rodgers’ music is showcased just as masterfully here as the lyrics, it’s the affinity with Hart that Gillett so movingly emphasizes with his warm and far-ranging tenor. The album lends his nightclub ecstasies and reveries a studio polish, while retaining their mesmerizing atmosphere of chamber cabaret-jazz. Don Rebic’s arrangements reach brilliant heights, driven by his own piano, with echoes here and there of the great Bill Evans.
Some songs stand alone, like their narrator, including the catchy, wry opener, “Sing For Your Supper,” a heady fusion of cynical expediency and off-kilter innocence. But the medleys go even deeper, finding revelatory affinities. While love builds on itself in “My Romance/My Funny Valentine,” emotional and musical currents intertwine and collide elsewhere: intellectual distance and dawning regret in “Falling in Love with Love/It Never Entered My Mind”; operetta and jazz in “Vilia/My Heart Stood Still.” (“Vilia,” composed by Franz Lehar, is the only non-Rodgers music here.) Perhaps the album’s pinnacle is “Nobody’s Heart/This Funny World,” with hypnotic swirls of ragtime enveloping the keening solitude of the astonishing vocal.
Hart could do happy, and so can Gillett; the triumphant medley of “Have You Met Miss Jones/Wait ‘Till You See Her/The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” is a saga of mutual love (“And all at once I lost my breath, and all at once was scared to death, and all at once I owned the earth and sky”), and both lyricist and singer make it sound convincing. But it’s the stark moments of finely wrought, bravely endured sorrow when their sensibilities merge most stirringly, lifted to glory by Rodgers’ enchanting melodies. Amanda McBroom’s liner notes proclaim Hart and Gillett “the perfect couple,” but this is a menage a trois.

Eric sings these songs as if they were written for him
The arrangements strike a beautiful balance of rich and sparse, the players are classy, and Eric's voice is perfect. He sings these songs as if they were written for him. Bravo.
