Album Notes
WakeUp! is the debut album in a collaboration between drummer Vin Scialla and tenor saxophonist Eric Schugren, released on Liftoff records /Prime Directive. For this project, ranging from organ trio to sextet, Schugren and Scialla bring in Brian Charette on Hammond B3 organ and Mike Dirubbo on alto saxophone, Jeff Fairbanks on trombone, Fabio Morgera on trumpet and Nano Valerio on congas. Jazz Organist Brian Charette and altoist Mike DiRubbo are Downbeat 2014 Rising Star Award Winners. The album WakeUp! is a recording that bridges the traditional organ trio and the contemporary 'World Jazz' idioms without losing sight of the hard-bop groove and improvisational fire that attracted all of these musicians to jazz.

Schugren and Scialla both have a long tradition of playing straight ahead jazz and world music.

There is an admiration for straight–ahead on this album, however, Scialla and Schugren’s compositions transcend one particular genre of music. From the top of this recording, the quartet hits Jackie Mclean’s Appointment in Ghana with precision and the ferocity associated with New York City’s creative energy. This upbeat track sets the tone for what follows. The arrangement of vibraphonist Steve Nelson's New Beginnings, by Scialla, creates interplay between the 3-horn line and the drummer that is reminiscent of Art Blakey’s hard swinging bands. TC Blues, co-written by Scialla and Schugren, begins with a North African percussion pattern on djembe and riqq, reflecting Scialla’s passion for Middle Eastern and African music, and becomes an open blowing blend of percussion and hard bop in 9/8. Schugren's MPB is a nod to Willie Bobo, featuring percussionist Nano Valerio.
