ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Erika and Lisa are so grateful that we met in Tblisi, Georgia in 2013 where we began a musical theatre project, The Smell of the Soul. (Lisa, a musician and puppeteer, usually sings in ‘Istisch’, her own invented language and Erika is a theatre writer and performer.) We have since performed that piece with Christian Bestle in Georgia, Germany, Indonesia and Canada.

Working together we discovered that combining Lisa’s music and mystical Istisch lyrics with Erika’s theatrical English lyrics and melodies, allows an exciting entryway into both the text and the music. We created the CD Inhale in 2014 and reunited in 2017 to create Soften. We hope you enjoy it.

Erika Batdorf has performed, directed, animated art openings and created award-winning work shared in 12 countries and 14 US states (at venues such as Luminato in Toronto, Venice Bienalle 2015 official collateral event with 9dragonheads, Indonesia, Salihara International Theatre Festival 2013 and 7th International Women’s Playwriting Festival 2007, The Smithsonian Institute, Harvard University, The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco). She sings mostly because she loves creating melodies and lyrics to Lisa's moving and original music.

Lisa Schamberger is a prolific and completely unique composer, singer, musician and puppeteer based in Southern Germany. She creates original music with accordion, hang drum and a variety of other instruments and a unique series of Children’s Audiobooks "Geschichten aus Ötz" and puppet shows. She works with theatre artists internationally and has performed in Germany, Austria, Italy, Indonesia, Canada, Korea and Georgia. She invented her own language Istisch, that is heard on this album.
