Album Notes
Ernest (Ernie) Newsom,
Is a pastor and retired Naval and VA Chaplain who fell in love with music at a very early age after listening to his grandmother's records. Those records consisted of musical legendarys as: Fats Waller, Louise Armstrong, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton and many others. Ernie later joined the high school band at Manassas HS, Memphis, TN where he was introduced to the clarinet under the tutelage of Matthew Garrett, the band master and professional musician from Barbados. Ernie learned and played music along side of musical giants as Hank Crawford, Hal Mayburn, Booker Little, Charles Lloyd and others. After graduating from HS, Ernie went on to play two years in College at Johnson C. Smith Univ. Charlotte, N.C. He then, discontinued playing music in order to concentrate more on his chosen field, Psychology where he earned both the BS and MS degrees. He would later enter Seminary where he earned the Masters and Doctorate degrees in Ministry. Career wise, Ernie, was called into the ministry where he served as a pastor, a VA Chief Chaplain, A Command Chaplain for the US Navy Reserves earning the rank of Naval Captain. All the while serving his country in various parts of the world, he continued to enjoy listening to jazz and attending jazz concerts.
Now having retired from the service, Ernie has decided to return to his musical "roots" where he not only plays the clarinet with passion and conviction, but also he has taught himself to play the saxophone (alto, tenor, soprano), and the flute. He can be found almost every weekend "gigging" at a festival, wedding, banquet, reunion, and you name it, in and around Murfreesboro, TN where he and his wife reside. He considers himself doubly blessed in many ways to be able to reestablish himself in the musical world after all the years that passed. He expresses this " great gift of music" from God in this latest CD, "Make A Way" an eight track CD that points the way to God through music and feels that he is "paying back" some of his dues to God and to a society that has been such a blessing to him. Ernie owes a great deal of credit to Freddie and Dale Richardson for providing him with the support and resources both human and technical in the production of this CD, also Maggie Richardson for lending her melodious voice on two of the tracks, to Chris Davis for his outstanding arrangements and programming, but most of all to his wife, Nolia for her kind and gentle encouragement and copying of the CD's This eight track Production consists of ALL Originals and is a "Must Hear CD" for all music lovers especially those in the jazz and Latin categories. I pray that you will enjoy the CD half as much as Ernie has enjoyed producing it for your listening pleasure. Please check Him out on Face Book, I Tunes, U tube and others. He will appreciate any and all comments concerning the CD.
