Album Notes
With a style that incorporates English and Spanish lyrics, vocals and rhymes, turntables and a guiro, rock and reggae, there is something for everyone. Este Vato are at their best when they produce their style of funky cumbias mixed with hip hop. It is a style or genre that is often attempted but rarely pulled off, but Este Vato have it mastered as if they have been playing together for years. Guiro master and emcee Feliciano “Chano” Lopez has a smooth, brown-fisted lyrical flow that compliments lead vocalist Ricardo Lara without overpowering him. Ian Morales - Austin Vida

It sounds like a weird reality TV show premise: What happens when you mix a metal guitarist, an acoustic singer/songwriter, a hip-hop emcee, a jazzy drummer, an alt-rock bassist and a psychedelic turntablist?

What you get is the band Este Vato. What connects them is their love of Latin music and their belief in spreading cultural education and pride through song. The Austin-based Latin fusion group has only been around since late 2008, but they’ve caught our attention early and often with their infectious live show and approachable every-man demeanor.

As the band members’ diverse music backgrounds suggest, Este Vato is a versatile group that can deliver a mellow cumbia, a raging protest tune or a catchy rock en español number. AJ Miranda-Austin Vida

Este Vato has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with such big name acts as Molotov, Los Enanitos Verdes, 3Ball Mty, and Los Palominos as well as played Pachanga Latino Music Festival twice with many popular and regional acts including Ozomatli, Los Lobos, Grupo Fantasma, and Celso Piña to name a few.
