Redemption

by Elaine Townsend

If John Hiatt, the Indigo Girls and Professor Longhair met at the crossroads to play a few tunes, Elaine Townsend's Redemption could easily be the result.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Elaine Townsend may have opened shows for the likes of Fleetwood Mac and k.d. Lang, but Redemption finds her in a more fitting element: namely, performing for an intimate venue for a small clutch of fans and admirers. Getting help from such luminaries as Danielle Howle and Hootie and the Blowfish drummer Jim "Soni" Sonefeld, the Columbia, SC based Townsend writes acoustic-based folk songs that cut a wide swath through the genre. Whether offering up hymn-like, sax-laced folk pop ("Midnight garden") or plunky Delta blues ("Longing to Belong"), Townsend strikes a perfect balance between soulful intensity and understated humor.
High points on Redemption include the beautiful, lounge-tinged "La Luna" (which features Howle on background Vocals), the gently waltzing "Flame of Devotion", and a syncopated, dead-on version of Talking Heads' "slippery people" that would put a smile on the face of David Byrne. Far from being a strident performer, Townsend instead shows the grace and confidence to let her songs speak for themselves.

Cool grooves, solid songs and impressive acoustic guitar.
Cool grooves and solid songwriting nailed down with impressive acoustic guitar chops. There's lots of variety here -- from the full-out blues of "Longing to Belong" to the sweet lusty "Surrender" to the rollicking zydeco "Fourteen Forever." My favorite cut, "Peace Resides in the Mystery," features just a guitar and two voices with a groove so appealing I could dive in and be lost for days. Great musicianship and tasty arrangements, all served in a mouth watering meal.

I love this CD.
Why do I love this CD? It just feels good from beginning to end. I play it when I work in my pottery studio. The songs just settle into me as I work. They have life. They feel honest. There is, of course, great guitar, but it's much more than that.
