ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Evelyn Nicholson, trained at the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music, is a pupil of Carolyn Crawshaw, Andrew Field and Audrey Langford. She won a scholarship to the National Opera Studio and went on to sing principal roles at all the British Opera houses, and from there, went on to sing in France and Germany. She is fortunate to have sung with all the great conductors of the time, and even in the subset years of Sir Reginald Goodall, and toured all over. Although a Mozart and Verdi specialist, and a noted singer of coloratura, Evelyn has been a feted celebrity performer with choirs, who enjoy inspirrational and uplifting music as well as the great arias. This is a debut cd and several others are planned, all of songs which have been tried and tested in the concert hall and been enthusiastically received.

Some of these tracks are time-honoured, people having heard them at weddings and other family occasions, the tunes being so strong that they have formed a place in eaveryone's heart. Others are less well known, Handel's 'Let the Bright Seraphim being sung at a Royal Wedding and many other weddings.Three settings of the 'Ave Maria' are featured. The version, where Charles Gounod has taken a prelude of Johann Sebastian Bach and written a most famous and soaring melody over the top is perhaps the best known. Franz Schubert's version is also well known, perhaps not in its German Lied (Song) form, but in the Latin version presented here, much shorter and with words that are far more accessible to the non German speaker. The last version has been made from the opera 'Cavalleria Rusticana' by Pietro Mascagni , from the Intermezzo. It is not sung often but everyone loves the tune.

Other tracks include another wedding favourite 'Laudate Dominum' from the Mozart 'Vespers'-a setting of the Psalm, Praise the Lord, all ye Lands'. This version is given with piano and was recorded at Llantarnam Abbey with the Nidus Singers and Children's Choir. Then there is Alfred Hay Malotte's inspirational song 'The Lord's Prayer', popular for a century as well as the beautiful 'Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring', A short version of Delibes 'Flower Duet' is given here as a solo and duet, but omits the central operatic solo passages.

The Nuns' Chorus song is given here from the operetta 'Casanova' in which the heroine longs to be with her beloved again, after being in a monastery. This song is given as a kind of Wedding Blessing. Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Pie Jesu' is also offered as one of the great inspirational classics of the twentieth century.'

Adam's 'O Holy Night ' is sung at midnight at Notre Dame on Christmas Eve every year. Evelyn's treatment of the song is powerful and dramatic emphasising the power of that night when the infant Christ was born. She is joined by the award winning Nidus childrens choir and the Nidus Singers from Cwmbran ,South Wales who sing with passion and conviction.

Evelyn is planning several more albums from her most popular and well received concert favourites, and the next album 'I Give my Heart' is planned for later next year.
