Album Notes
Pianist and lecturer, Elaine Vander Plate Held, performs music most people have never had the opportunity to hear...the music of unknown, forgotten, yet talented women composers throughout history.

When in 1980 Ms Vander Plate Held became interested in the subject of classical music written by women, she was dismayed to find how little of it was published and available outside of library holdings. As she researched the names of women composers and learned of their music, it became apparent that there was a rich trove of extraordinary music by women which was not being recognized or performed. It was with this new realization that the lecture concerts, "Honoring Women Composers," was born. These concerts opens up a whole new world of music for audiences. She often invites other professional musicians to perform with her to add variety to the concert and to make it clear that women composers wrote for all genres of music. Ms. Vander Plate Held takes the time to describe the composer's life, their struggles, their dreams, and their courage in the face of extraordinary family and societal hurdles. But it is so much more than a concert experience..."this is a rare opportunity to bring women's music into parity with men's music, by promoting and finally honoring the rightful worth of women composers". In 1999 she presented an organ recital in Dokkum, The Netherlands, the only organist from the United States in the twelve-concert series and the only performer to play music by women composers.

Elaine Vander Plate Held received a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and a Masters of Church Music in Choral Conducting and Organ Performance from Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ. She studied piano with Joan Lippincott, Mathilde McKinney, and Harold Zabrack; organ with Eugene Roan and John Weaver in NYC; conducting with Constantina Tsoulainou, Frauke Haasemaan, and Allan Crowell. She has concertized as a solo and ensemble pianist and organist, as an accompanist for singers and instrumentalists, and served as a guest conductor for children and adult choir festivals. She has been a church musician for almost 30 years, conducting choirs and orchestras, and performing the organ, piano, and harpsichord repertoire.

Excellent music, beautifully rendered -- bring on Volume 2!
It's such a delight to hear the Mozart-like Martinez, no wasted notes, and the lush Notturno of Schumann. I love the Florence Price -- the Andante is so strong yet gentle and soothing. The rags are all fun. Ms. Held really loves this music -- and it shows!

A Tour through Music History like you have never heard
Travel through time as Elaine Held plays from all style periods as given to us by under-played and under-appreciated women composers. There are moments of pathos and passion, ecstacy and whimsy. The piano is at once warm and sparkling. The big sonata by Little Rock, AR composer Florence Price is worth the price of 2 CDs! You will play this CD over and over.

Thanks for remembering and honoring these wonderful forgotten women!!!
Eventhough I am not a connoisseur of classical music I love being introduced to women composers this way. It's a wonderful cd with fabulous choices of music. I totally enjoyed the CD especially the pieces of Clara Wieck and Florence Price. Ready for Volume 2!!!

Judith Carluccio

What a thrill to hear the music of women played as it should be
What a thrill to hear women's music played with the passion of a great love and conviction of the first one. Elaine Held's piano rings with the strength and tenderness,
the joyful noise and remembrance the composers surely meant it to have. Give a listen and then another and another!

Cynthia Dietzel

An inspiring and spirit-lifting musical journey.
It is inspiring to hear the music of so many talented women who, too often, go unnoticed. The move from classical to ragtime is effortless. The sound is joyous and lifts my day.

Exhilarating listening, covering a gamut of periods and styles
I found myself refreshed and awakened by these rare musical gems, and riveted by the artist's masterful performance. It is a CD I will enjoy again and again!
