Album Notes
Fang Fang’s musical style, something of a throw-back to seventies and eighties punk, has been compared to The Replacements, Elvis Costello, and The Clash. Far from their only influences, Fang Fang borrows heavily from such musical entities as, The Proclaimers, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, Aimee Mann, Gipsy Kings, Fugazi, Paul Simon, Rancid, Ramones, Violent Femmes, Dinosaur Jr and others. Fang Fang is currently comprised of Tom Manns (guitar and vocals), Chris Lyons (bass), Marina Manns (drums) Sara Klein (vocals and percussion) and Kenny Klein (guitar). Despite being made up primarily of busy blue collar families, Fang Fang has been fairly prolific. Besides filming a handful of music videos and writing for other projects, Fang Fang has had four cd releases, "For Fans of Fang Fang" being the latest. Fang Fang was started in 2004 by Tom Manns after ten years of playing and touring with Philadelphia punk quartet, One-21. In 2005 ex-band mate, Jon Weldon, joined Tom Manns bringing with him drummer Greg Lytle. They spent about six months practicing, writing, looking for a bass player and trying to choose a name for the band. The Cleveland Browns, Lightning Bolton, The Thang, The E Build-ups, The Authority, The Noisy Burglars and Sunny and Share, were a few of their potentials. They finally decided to stick with their working title “Fang Fang”. Toward the end of 2005 the band found a bass player in Fred Sheaffer who stayed for only one year. Since 2005 Fang Fang has performed regularly in Philadelphia and surrounding areas, appearing mostly at small bar venues. Both guitarist, Jon Weldon and drummer, Greg Lytle eventually left the band to pursue firefighting and art, respectively. Fang Fang added Chris Lyons and Joey Ryan to fill the resulting gaps in the line-up, and in 2010 brought on ex One-21 singer Kenny Klein to play percussion and rhythm guitar. In 2012 Joey Ryan left Fang Fang and was replaced by Sara Klein and Marina Manns, the wives of Kenny Klein and Tom Manns. Fang Fangs first recording, a six song demo cd was released in the summer of 2005. At the end of 2007 Fang Fang released it’s first full length cd, self titled "Fang Fang", and did a short tour in January of 2008 to promote the album. Fang Fang’s second full length album "Mother" was released in November 2011. Followed by "For Fans of Fang Fang" in October 2015. "For Fans of Fang Fang" continues to follow Fang Fangs pattern of quirky but catchy writing set to punk influenced rock music. -Franklin Rhodes
