ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
I was not born in Coimbra, nor I have been a student of its university. Coimbra songs, however (of both student and futrica origin), appeal to my sensibility. It is true that this music expresses a kind of romanticism that touches on surrealism. Some of the fados address a historical reality which only a few of us can claim to have enjoyed. Thus, many Coimbra songs can only be appreciated in context: a serenade, a "canto de intervencao" session, the St. John's "fogueiras", or a "desgarrada". Perhaps a great part of the enchantment of this music comes exactly from that kind of nostalgia for a past experienced just by a few; the truly Portuguese "saudade".
