Album Notes
For those of us who have been longing for a second album from the Prince-produced group, The Family, this CD is truly Paradise. The Family never got the credit and album sales that they deserved. And now, 26 years later (!), these extraordinarily talented musicians have re-united as fDeluxe and have put together a body of work that seems to pick up right where The Family left off. If you love funk, particularly the type that simmered in the mid-1980's, you'll love this. If you are a fan of what is called the Minneapolis Sound, then this is the CD for you. The lyrics are creative and artful, showing that you don't have to be blunt to be provocative. The instrumentation is fantastic, with amazing horn arrangements by Eric Leeds, and string arrangements by Paul Peterson (St. Paul) that are very reminiscent of the emotional, swelling orchestration of the old "The Family" album. And Peterson's and Susannah Melvoin's vocals mesh beautifully, as if they were born to sing together. Even though fDeluxe's jazz/funk sound is probably considered "old school" now, fDeluxe makes it sound fresh and exciting. This CD has an updated version of that "Princely" sound that made The Family album work so well. And they didn't even need "The Artist Formerly Known As..." to do it! Most albums that take so long to materialize are usually extreme disappointments. Not the case here, however--just the opposite, in fact. This has to be one of the best CDs of the year from a group of extremely underrated musicians. Let's hope that this is the album that finally gets this "family" of musicians noticed in a major way. Welcome back, gang. We missed you SO much!
