Album Notes
The album was written, arranged and recorded by Fine Soft Day over 12 months, starting in the long, dry summer of 2018.

The concept originated around a single song, River, which concentrated on the idea of 2 people from different times and different societies standing on the same point on the earth and sensing a connection. We felt that there was more to explore from the idea and so Five Songs expanded the concept further.

We hadn't particularly set out to write a whole concept album but it felt like the material needed to be written and heard.

The concept became a suite, but the writing flowed and, eventually, the concept became 11 songs.

The band's folk rock roots were becoming inevitably influenced by their shared love of classic progressive rock and there are echoes of Genesis, Yes and Pink Floyd to name a few. As the recordings and arrangements developed, multi-layered, complex vocal harmonies began to feature across much of the album.

We wanted to capture the feeling that we used to have when we used to listen to albums such as Close To The Edge, Dark Side Of The Moon, Foxtrot or In The Court Of The Crimson King - the sense of the listener being taken on a journey. Albums are rarely listened to in the same way any more, but we hope that listeners will share that experience.

There are recurring narratives, lyrical motives and melodies throughout the work that tie the material together.

The circle and the square.

All the material was written, arranged, performed, recorded, produced and mixed by Fine Soft Day.

Fine Soft Day are:

Jeff Gascoyne: Bass, electric guitar, violin, vocals
Martin Hanbury: Electric and acoustic guitars, vocals
Mark Sweeney: Keyboards, vocals
