Album Notes
This is the new Special Edition of Samurai Over Serbia. It features an entirely new, much improved recording of Aaron Seeman's (Duckmandu's) song "Extremely Large Congenial Romanian" recorded and engineered by Chris Parsons in Santa Cruz, CA. A great photo from Djangofest 2007 on Widbey Island now graces the back cover, and several errors (whoops) have been corrected in the liner notes. Also, the CD is now in a more artistic and durable DigiPak. Enjoy!

“For those in need of having their dervish whirled, the Bay Area's Fishtank Ensemble are the rompin', stompin' leaders of cross-pollinated Gypsy music. French fiddler Fabrice Martinez paid dues gigging Europe in a mule-drawn caravan, including stints in Romani villages. El Douje is the master of 21st-century flamenco guitar, while Aaron Seeman (Duckmandu) is the king of punk accordion. Audience eyes tend to focus on Ursula Knudson, not only for her virtuosic saw playing and a voice that sings in octaves not yet invented, but also for her sensual beauty. The mix includes Mike Penny on Japanese shamisen and the world's greatest upright bass slap technician Djordje Stijepovic direct from Serbia. Here we have a young band that is one of the most thrilling live acts on the planet.”

Challenging new work from Fishtank
Although lacking in some of the catchier, foot-tapping numbers of Super Raoul, Samurai over Serbia still possesses that essential Fishtank je ne sais quoi. Something about Roumanian-style violin mixed with shamisen, slap bass, accordion, and Flamenco guitar tickles my ear in a way quite unlike any other sound I've heard. Fishtank is the genuine article - even though this album is not as accessible as their first, including lots of numbers in non-Western rhythms (no easy 4/4 for you, my friend!), this adventurous musical rollercoaster is worth the challenge. I especially enjoyed their truly joyful rendition of Turkish March - it literally brought a smile to my face.
