ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Winnipeg’s favourite gypsy-folk-orchestral outfit, Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers captures your heart and intellect with beautifully gritty portrayals of myth and nature through an engaging theatrical performance experience. The warmth and depth within the virtuosic vocal passages, are accompanied by glistening horn movements and a thunderous rhythm section. Their unique blend of folk, pop, jazz and classical music has been described as 'Hawksley Workman meets Calexico' and 'a gypsy version of Queen'. “Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers break down the barriers between popular music and the more obscure corners of classical” (Verb, 2013).

Fruit and Ash, the most recent release from Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers is a four song collection that re-imagines the human experience through the eyes of the natural world. It is a meditation on life, death and the inhabitants that suffer it. Salmon and Boatmen display the group's signature twist on popular song format, while Dragonfly and Ant Eating Matriarch delve into the ambitious compositional elements that defines Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers' unique genre-defying sound. Fruit and Ash was released June 1st, 2013, on the Transistor 66 label.

Since the release of their debut full length album Hans My Lion in 2011, they've performed hundreds of shows throughout the country, selling out rooms in their hometown of Winnipeg and developing a firm following across Canada. Hans My Lion earned 5 star reviews in several publications, and was described as "an album with no shortage of imaginative material that is bound to become a classic." (The Uniter)

Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers, since their formation in 2007, have performed at The Big Timeout, North Country Fair, South Country Fair, Canada Day at Calgary's Prince's Island Park, The Komasket Music Festival, the Brandon Folk Festival, the Winnipeg Jazz Festival, and the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Maintaining a busy tour schedule has allowed Flying Fox to share stages with acts including Elliot Brood, Black Mountain, Bahamas, Dan Mangan, Buffy Ste. Marie, Arrested Development, Five Alarm Funk, Fred Penner, Dave Bidini and The Waking Eyes.

Dynamic and engaging, Flying Fox is powerful force, and a refreshing change to the dominant sounds in independent music today.
