CAROLINA GOLD!
"Beach Music" is the bright, upbeat R&B/blue-eyed soul sound of the Carolinas. If you don't know it, this compilation's a great place to start: danceable, horn-heavy
tunes fit for the shag. Many of these songs are still staples on the Strand (Myrtle Beach and environs): "Summer-
time's Calling Me", "Super Summer" and "That's Summertime To Me"- the theme song of a much-loved Raleigh deejay, Dale Van Horn. My favorite newer track is "Staring" by the Imitations, with its great Crescent City/Allen Toussaint flavor. With one exception- Harry's Band's cover of the unique Billy Stewart version of Gershwin's "Summertime" (stick with the original)- these songs are probably unknown north of Hampton Roads. But you can enjoy this great regional sound right here- even if you don't shag!
