Durch Die Blumen

by Fork Burke

How do we express closeness and distance directly? Musicians became the means by which the text could begin and speak in specific ways the musicians became the flowers and the offering.

Album Notes
The project “Durch die Blumen” began in January 2014 as Spoken Word project – 14 Swiss musicians mostly from Biel-Bienne were chosen to collaborate in a recording session that took place once a month over the course of one year. Each musician was assigned a month and a new text to be realized in one session. All recordings took place at the same atelier.

The artists include:

Stude – Beni 06 - Sophie Hofer – Sirup Gagavil – Hari Köchli – Henry Strongbox – Kevin Chesham – Sarah Palin – Susanne Walther – Frank Heierli - Igor Stepniewski – Flo Kaufmann – Nick Porsche - Alain Croubalian – Fork Burke

The phrase “Durch die Blumen” was the first memory I have of German language pulling me into its historical layers of communication. Not only did the words have to be translated but the meaning and use. To speak through the flowers - to speak through this gesture and offering of a specific flower – to be direct and disrupt and still maintain the illusion of giving. All these aspects that embody ways in which text communicates and so I chose to do this project as an exploration attempting to speak. To say something that must be said but through various sound interpretations and to allow this project to inform the work and various text over the period of a year. I wanted to let the project lead and so I followed the random direction of the project and created a new text for each particular musician of the month. “Durch die Blumen” seemed to create text that was specific to the monthly collaboration and the artist became this means by which translation itself creates a separate story.
