Album Notes
THE BEAUTIFUL PIANO, the second in the latest Instrumental Piano CD series by Canadian worship musician Debbie Fortnum, is in the special position of already having been nominated for three and winning one Canadian GMA Covenant Awards from its 2007 independent release. D2/Fontana North/Universal were so impressed by her talent that they have offered Debbie a distribution deal throughout Canada. THE BEAUTIFUL PIANO is now available at every Canadian WalMart, as well as most Christian supply stores throughout Canada now!

Fortnum, who also recorded a duet with Brian Doerksen on his JUNO Award-winning album, "Holy God", has also ministered with him at his CD Release Concerts, and at the Canadian GMA Covenant Awards.

THE BEAUTIFUL PIANO was produced in collaboration with Chris Janz, multi-Award winning artist/producer and son of Canadian Juno Award legend, Paul Janz. His expertise in orchestral arranging has an unmistakable presence on the CD, taking it to star quality. After a 1995 meeting, the two musicians clicked and Janz produced four out of her five albums.

“He's incredibly gifted, and is the encouraging dynamite underneath my piano playing,” says Fortnum.” “There is nothing that makes me feel more alive than being in the recording studio. With Chris, there is not one single sheet of music in the studios when we record! It is all a very spontaneously creative and moving experience.”

As Debbie began to follow her musical dreams, fans began to follow her and her music. Her five Indie CDs, both vocal and piano, keep selling off shelves. Even though her music has not been counted by Soundscan until THE BEAUTIFUL PIANO's distro deal, she is one of Canada’s best selling Indie Artists, selling over 16,000 from stage and internet. Fortnum has received a total of 14 Canadian Award Nominations and three Awards so far, in 2006 & 2007.

“My experience as a Worship Leader and a Wedding Pianist (she has played at over 100 weddings since age 13) has helped me learn what instrumental piano music can do for people,” explains Fortnum. “In our crazy, busy culture, we are lacking healthy ways to retreat, think, process our own thoughts and emotions and even breathe long enough to re-connect with what's most important in life.”

THE BEAUTIFUL PIANO is an intensely personal album for Fortnum as she wrote instrumental songs for each of her children in her living room on her Grandmother's antique piano. There are also two bonus vocal tracks including “I Am Yours” that she wrote / sang for her husband on their wedding day. “Chris loved it, saying that it is one of the best songs he'd ever heard come out of me and that we needed to record it,” explains Fortnum. “I’m a hopeless romantic so I called my husband Scott and asked if I could share "our song" with the world! He gladly agreed!”

With over 96+ touring dates last year, and even more on the calendar for 2008, Debbie is hitting the road again with an inspiring musical message of Love, Hope and Beauty through her music!

Fortnum has also just released her third Instrumental CD called THE HEALING PIANO, full of ancient hymns, original tunes, and two stirring bonus vocal tracks.

Her enchanting instrumental Christmas CD, THE CHRISTMAS PIANO (which received Covenant Award Nominations for Seasonal Album of the Year and Seasonal Song of the Year) has become a family favourite for many, and provides exquisite choice of background music for Christmas entertaining!

”A rare combination of musical ability, maturity and significant gift of songwriting!” ~Nashville Producer and Award-winning songwriter, Dick Tunney

”One of the many things that we appreciate about Debbie is her ability to reach out and touch all ages and types of women. Her musical talent unquestionably is one of the best. If you have met Debbie once, you will feel you have a friend forever." ~Conference / Event Planner from Bellingham, WA

”Debbie always seems to find a way to engage so many people in what is happening around the world. Her support to the victims of the tsunami, earthquakes, hurricanes, and flooding has been substantial. Only God knows how many lives were touched by her ministry.” ~Ben Hoogendoorn, President Canadian Food for the Hungry International

Kathy Parsons

“The Beautiful Piano” is a wonderful collection of original pieces, arrangements of pop songs and hymns; all are piano instrumentals except the two vocal pieces that are featured at the end of the album as “bonus tracks.” In addition to being a singer/songwriter/pianist, Fortnum is an inspirational speaker and worship leader. Both wife and daughter of ministers and the mother of three, Fortnum wears her heart and spirituality on her sleeve, a gift to all who are receptive to her openness and musicality. Three of the original pieces are loving tributes to each of her children and one of the vocal selections is a piece Fortnum sang to her husband on their wedding day - all deeply personal yet universally understood. In her liner notes, Fortnum explains that her intention with this album is to bring a sense of soothing sanctuary to busy lives, support to the institution of marriage, and to help people discover their destinies to love and be loved by God.

“The Beautiful Piano” opens with “Dance of the Angels (Moriah’s Song),” a piece composed for her eldest daughter. Fortnum paints a musical portrait of a very self-confident young person, living life to the fullest, and protected by her angels. Next up is the venerable “Pachelbel Canon in D,” arranged for piano and strings. The most powerful piece on the album is the stunning “Easter Morning Sunrise.” A tribute to the beauty of the events surrounding Christ’s Passion Week, this dark and deeply emotional piece sends tingles down the back of my neck. Fortnum’s voice is one of the musical instruments used, and the wordless vocals symbolize her “speechless wonder of it all.” The whole album is really good, but this one piece is worth the price by itself. Breathtaking! “Love Divine” is an old hymn written by Charles Wesley, given a lovely, contemporary setting for solo piano. “Let Me Comfort You (Noah’s Song)” was composed for Fortnum’s son. Tender and loving, Noah himself insisted that Chris Janz, Fortnum’s co-producer and recording partner, play electric guitar on his song, giving it a more “boyish” touch. “Morning Has Broken” is a popular hymn full of hope and optimism, this time as a piano solo. “Tears of Joy (Shanna’s Song)” was composed for Fortnum’s younger daughter, a dancer, and reflects some of the emotions associated with deep joy. “The Music Box Dancer” is a sweet little piece that never seems to go out of style (except through overuse on neighborhood ice cream trucks!). Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” is lovingly arranged for piano and strings. “Love Never Fails” is a vocal duet with Chris Janz. Fortnum wrote the piece as a teenager, basing the lyrics on 1st Corinthians, Chapter 13. It’s a beautiful setting for the Biblical guidelines for what love is. “I Am Yours” was written for Fortnum to sing to her husband at their wedding, a deeply personal expression of love and devotion.

“The Beautiful Piano” is very true to its title, and is a stirring collection of beautiful music with a Christian theme. Recommended!

Food for the soul

Very Moving and Meaningful!
What a wonderful CD! This music and CD is so inspirational that we feel it belongs to us only. Debbie seems to have captured the essence of what we were looking for in our wedding ceremony. Not only was the music wonderful, calming and elegant, but Debbie Fortnum actually returned my phone call to make sure I had been sent this CD. That alone was moving and special, since we had been looking for just the right pieces to use and time was closing in. This CD is a "GEM" and she is considered by both Kathy & myself as near to our hearts. Thanks Debbie!

The Beautiful Piano
This is so beautiful. I first heard you play on "Rejoice" on the Miracle Channel Christmas Eve. I was wondering if one can purchase the sound track and lyrics for "My Prayer for You This Christmas"? You have a beautiful gift and I was interested to hear you're from Regina,SK. I grew up at Montmartre! Bless you sister. Keep singing and playing from your heart! \o/
