Album Notes
The Four Seasons Orchestra is a leading professional chamber orchestra in the Southwest. We perform Classical, Baroque and new music. Carolyn Waters Broe is the Conductor and Artistic Director of this excellent ensemble. She is also the violist performing on the "Arizona Profiles" album with members of the orchestra. Four Seasons Orchestra was nominated in two Grammy categories for the year 2000 including "Best Small Ensemble" and "Best New Composition". The orchestra has also performed European premiers while on tour to Austria for the Haydn Festival. We feature many of our members as solo artists and chamber musicians. Our repertoire includes many rare and historic classical works as well as master pieces. This orchestra has been praised for its exceptional energy and talented musicians.

"Arizona Profiles" is the first CD ever produced of the music of American composer Louise Lincoln Kerr (1892-1977), who was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She wrote over 100 music compositions including fifteen symphonies, five ballets, a violin concerto and numerous pieces of chamber music. Kerr was known during her life as "The Grand Lady of Music". She attended Barnard College in New York, training in theory and composition with Columbia University Professors and on violin at the early Juilliard School of Music from 1910 to 1913. Then she became one of the first two women to join the early Cleveland Symphony Municipal Orchestra in Ohio. She returned to New York, married and had eight children. During the 1920's she worked for Aeolian studios proof reading piano rolls and worked with almost every famous pianist at the time including Gershwin, Prokofiev and Cortot. Later Kerr was the ghost conductor in the sound booth for the early disk recordings of modern music.

Louise Kerr moved to Arizona for the health of one of her daughters. There she co-founded the Phoenix Symphony, the Phoenix Chamber Music Society and many other arts organizations. She performed violin and viola in many groups and founded an Artist's Colony in Scottsdale, Arizona. Kerr was a member of the Phoenix Composers Forum that was inspired to compose Southwestern Impressionism by Ferde Grofe, who wrote the "Grand Canyon Suite". Many of Louise Kerr's compositions are based on Southwest themes inspired by Spanish folk tunes, Native American melodies, cowboy hoedowns and ragtime jazz. What is so unique is how she blended all of these colors with 19th and 20th century classical genres. Many of her jazz inspired compositions are some of the earliest written for strings. You will also hear French Impressionism, German Romanticism, and Spanish progressions. The result is some of the most gorgeous chamber music ever written. Louise Kerr donated her home and studio to Arizona State University, which is now the ASU Kerr Cultural Center in Scottsdale. She also donated to ASU her music manuscripts, music library, rare instruments and funds for a music scholarship. She won several awards in composition during her lifetime and was given an honorary Doctorate from Arizona State University. Louise Kerr's music is a national treasure that is the "undiscovered country" waiting for new music lovers to find her.

American violist Carolyn Waters Broe holds a Doctorate in Musical Arts from Arizona State University. She has been the featured soloist and conductor with orchestras in California and Arizona. She has also performed with many celebrities and recorded on numerous albums. She studied viola with Jerry Epstein of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Louis Kievman of the NBC Symphony, Romanian solo violist Adriana Chirilov, and Dr. William Hall at ASU. Carolyn Broe is the Conductor of the Four Seasons Orchestra of Scottsdale, Arizona. She performs on a Michael Fischer viola with a rich dark tone. Broe has been told that she has a very beautiful viola tone that is perfect for recordings. Carolyn studied conducting with John Koshak at Chapman University and attended master classes with Leonard Bernstein, Herbert Blomstedt, Seiji Ozawa and Dr. Michael Zearott.

American pianist Miriam Yutzy Hickman also holds a Doctorate in Musical Arts from Arizona State University in piano accompaniment. She has performed many chamber music concerts and accompanied major solo artists from many US symphonies including Philadelphia, Chicago, Cleveland, the National Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco and Phoenix. She studied with Eckart Sellheim, Robert Hamilton, Claude Cymerman, and Glenn Sherman. She has performed chamber music with Quintessence, Southwest Brass, Double Play and Brevard Trio.

The Four Seasons String Quartet gave the world premiere of Kerr's String Quartet in A Major at ASU. They have performed numerous concerts in Arizona. Mr. Dana Pasley is a first violinist with the Phoenix Symphony. He has also been the featured violin soloist with numerous symphonies including Chandler, Arizona Chamber Orchestra and the Four Seasons Orchestra. He has been described by the conductor and pianist of Elvis's Band as "One of the two finest concertmasters in the world" that they had performed with. Dana studied with Ken Goldsmith, Glen Dicterow of the New York Philharmonic, and Lori Ulanova of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Before coming to Arizona, he performed extensively with Pacific, Pasadena, and the Glendale symphony orchestras. He as a very rare and sweet sounding vibrato that makes his high notes sing with great emotion. He is also the violinist with the Concordia Trio. Judi Benson, second violinist, has been a member of the Las Vegas Philharmonic. She also performs with a rare sweet vibrato that blends perfectly with Dana's. She performs in the Sunland Strings and Arioso Duo in Phoenix. Judith performed with Elvis Presley in Lake Tahoe in his shows when she was a teenager. Carolyn Broe is the violist and founder of the Four Seasons String Quartet. She has also written her Doctorate on "The String Music of Louise Lincoln Kerr" and is considered the world's leading expert on her music and on Southwest Impressionism. She has performed in both Europe and China. American cellist Suzanne Campbell studied with Takiori Atsumi at Arizona State University. She has performed with many string quartets and orchestras and toured to Europe as a cellist with the Four Seasons Orchestra.
