Album Notes
The Music of Four Shillings Short
Travelling musicians with a carload of instruments is nothing new in the world of music, but what if one of those instruments is a Sitar from India or a Renaissance Krumhorn? For the musically curious a Four Shillings Short concert is an experience not to be missed. With an array of instruments (over 30 at last count), including sitar, dulcimers, mandolins, tinwhistles, banjo, recorders, woodwinds, charango, psalteries, percussion & vocals, their music is always varied and captivating.

The music of Four Shillings Short includes Traditional and Modern songs and instrumentals from Europe, Asia and the Americas, Indian Ragas, Medieval & Renaissance compositions and original works.
Their sound has been described as “a compelling and inviting musical journey through time and across the seas that is
authentic, traditional, spontaneous and as multi-cultural as a U.N. meeting”.
Since its inception in the San Francisco Bay Area, Four Shillings Short has always had an experimental streak. Formed in 1985 by Aodh Og O’Tuama of Cork, Ireland and Ernest Kinsolving of Phoenix, AZ, the band has included a changing cast over the years featuring many of Northern California’s Irish, Folk, Jazz and Classical musicians.

In 1995, the current partnership of Aodh Og O’Tuama and Christy Martin was formed and became the core of Four Shillings Short. The husband/wife duo tour year-round in the US and Ireland, are independent
artists with 12 recordings, perform 150 concerts a year and are modern day Troubadours traveling from town
to town, staying with friends & camping along the way.

Aodh Og O’Tuama grew up in a family of poets, musicians and writers. He received his degree in Music from University College Cork, Ireland & received a Fellowship from Stanford University in California in Medieval & Renaissance performance. He plays Tinwhistles, Recorders, Dumbek, Medieval & Renaissance woodwinds, Psaltery, Spoons and sings in English, French and Gaelic.

Christy Martin grew up in a family of musicians and dancers. At age 15, she studied North Indian Sitar for 10 years with a student of master Sitarist Ravi Shankar. She studied Hammered Dulcimer with Maggie Sansone, Dan Duggan, Tony Elman and Glen Morgan. She also plays Mandolin, Banjo, Mandola, Bouzouki, Guitar, Bodhran, Psaltery, Charango, Mountain Dulcimer and sings in English, Irish, Spanish and Sanskrit.
