Wait a Minute, Baby!

by Four Star Combo

Brace yourself for a high-speed tour of primal Rockabilly & Honky Tonk, played without any pretense of modernization or any kind of damn-fool 'fusion' of styles. “Wait A Minute” is the first full-length release by Washington DC’s best kept secret, Four Star Combo. The 12 tracks are evenly divided between spot-on authentic originals and revitalized covers. FSC is the brainchild of vocalist & bandleader, Ron Scott (vocals, guitars, harmonica), who had a long career in the Boston, MA music scene before migrating southward in 2007. The group is rounded out by some stellar players: Eric Hurtt on lead guitar, Donovan Stokes on upright bass, and Drake Sorey on drums. Since 2008, the Combo has played extensively in the Washington DC area at clubs, festivals, and has recently begun to gather a real head of steam. Don’t ‘wait a minute, baby’-BUY IT NOW!

Album Notes

The Four Star Combo is the brainchild of bandleader, Ron Scott, who has a long resume in the East Coast ‘Roots’ music scene. The sound of The Combo is high-energy 1950’s Rockabilly (think early Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins), and Honky Tonk (Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Lefty Frizzell, etc), played without any pretense of modernization or any kind of damn-fool 'fusion' of styles. The band engages the audience with a mix of Four Star originals and covers ranging from well-known to utterly obscure. Appearing in 1950's 'cat' clothes, playing vintage instruments-including the classic upright ‘slap’ bass-the band, and it's lively stage show are typically met with a raucous welcome, even from crowds unfamiliar with the style of music.

"Wait A Minute, Baby" is the band's first full-length album, a 50/50 mix of original songs and covers that will you an idea of where the group's heart is at.

Ron Scott (AKA "Bad Ron") - Lead vocals, guitar & harmonica: Ron, who is the founding member of the group, has a long history in the Boston and New England music scene. An early infatuation with the Blues led by degrees to an all-consuming passion for other related American styles: 50’s Rockabilly, Rock ‘N’ Roll, Rhythm & Blues, Jump, Swing, Honky Tonk Country, Gospel, and early 60’s Rock and Soul. Starting in 1981, Ron fronted 3 different bands-The Shakes, The Superfonics, and The RPM's-who collectively racked up a huge number of live dates in the area. Along the way, these groups played with many legendary Boston Punk & Rock acts, such as the Del Fuego's, Willie Alexander, The Lyres, and Barrence Whitfield & The Savages. They also shared the stage with such national acts such as Sleepy LaBeef, Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson, Duke Robillaird, The Paladins, Commander Cody & the Lost Planet Airmen, and Big Sandy and His Flyrite Boys. In 2006, Ron relocated to the Washington, DC area.

Eric Hurtt, "The Big Hurt" - Lead guitar, vocals: In his own words, "Growing up in the rust belt city of South Bend, Indiana, I developed an early fascination with swing and big band jazz. In high school I began doubling on guitar in various garage bands, and over the past twenty-odd years I have played variously in Northern Indiana/Southern Michigan based surf and garage combos Vibrolux and The Churchkey 5, country hopefuls The Bucket Kickers, Indianapolis’ own Tip Top Daddies with Eric Kinsey, and New Orleans’ premier surf and stomp outfit The Swamis and hillbilly boys The Hurtt Brothers."

Donovan Stokes “Dr. D” – Bass, backing vocals. “Dr. D” has played music since before he can remember….literally. He gravitated to the bass at age 13 and has been performing as a bassist ever since. From an early age he studied and performed in musical styles as diverse as classical, thrash, jazz and punk and often has weeks filled with musical schizophrenia. In 2000 he became enamored with Upright Slap bass and has never looked back. He currently plays Upright bass with the Four Star Combo and even has an instructional video on Rockabilly/Psycobilly Upright Bass Slap Technique. Donovan teaches music online and at Shenandoah University-Conservatory in Winchester, VA. He is also founder of the Bass Coalition, a group of bass players out to take over the world.

Drake Sorey, "The Oklahoma Kid" - Drums: Born and raised in Oklahoma, The Kid lived in California, Denmark, Kansas and Utah, before moving to Virginia at the turn of the century. His desire is to retire early somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, and work on expanding his collection of cowboy boots. Musical heroes include The Blasters, Nick Lowe, X, Johnny Cash, Bob Wills, The Paladins, Buck Owens, Gram Parsons and other music that DOESN'T SUCK!!
