Album Notes
"Fran Carbonaro’s brilliant musical and spoken word project expresses the broken and resilient heart of the howling feminine psyche. Through psychologically hip poetry and soulful vocals (sung by Jo Mansell) she draws the listener in and makes known the complex levels of human experience. Fasten your seat belt as she shepherds you through the realms of pain, anger, suffering, redemption, love and delight. If Terry Tempest Williams and Joni Mitchell secretly conceived a child her name just might be Fran Carbonaro." Kevin Russell, Kebtone Productions

This offering of poetry, ambient sound, and music is the creative culmination of decades of work, personally and professionally. Now in my 60s, armed with courage and passion (and flanked by highly talented musicians) I am moved to share my story, with the hope it will have a healing effect on those who choose to engage with it - both those who know the experience firsthand, and those who wish to understand it.

The residue of an unresolved past can haunt us, such that we feel bound, captive to our own personal pain. Or, it can be a gift, if we pay attention and become curious, if we find the courage and trust to enter in. My hope is that this work inspires a listener who may be yearning to move into that trust and beyond the shame that binds.

Merely surviving being raised in an environment of ongoing violence and devastating misogyny was not enough. Writing and recording these tracks allowed the deep cuts of trauma, the ones that would not heal in any other way, to evolve into acceptance, heart-strength and forgiveness.

Ultimately, viewing and expressing the truth of my own experiences through the lens of artistic expression, freed me to discover what is a joyfully resilient life. My journey has been guided and continues to be accompanied by many remarkably gifted and loving beings, seen and unseen, for which I am deeply grateful. I believe my ancestors are resting more deeply, as am I.

A Healing Arc
Right from the beginning, with a dream figure/apparition, Fran lets us know that although this has been a fearful journey she. will come through this intact, and so will we! There is a beautiful healing arc to this album that brings us along, and powerfully teaches us what it is to feel, to fear, to understand, to heal, to be whole.
Fran's poetry and original songs flow beautifully in a very integrated wholeness through this CD. The music is gorgeous , the poems so deep and flowing just like the music..
I would give this to anyone who has been through the family tragedy of abuse, as it will show them a light, a way, and that they are not what was done to them.

Beauty rising from the depths
It takes such courage to give words, or to even to find the words, to express and release the depths of childhood wounding. But Fran has created songs and poems that are both healing and empowering, and recorded them masterfully. She has transformed the anger and shame into a fierce beauty - rising from the depths to bloom like a lotus flowering on the still surface of water.

The music field is prolific, competitive, and supercharged with talent., but every now and then comes along a work of art so unique that it simply captures the spirit with its depths of beauty, human experience, , and soul. This work by Carbonaro is brilliant. The poetry within is dazzling as she plumbs the depths of a journey through pain, through grief and finds in resolution in the dance of redemption, through a musicality that reaches into the hearts of all who might hear this work. and simply stand in wonder. For this poet she has surpassed the common and become light itself.

Finding beauty in the dark
With tender fierceness, Fran Carbonaro's poems set to song tell a personal tale of unbinding the cords which bound her to a life of anger and powerlessness. Listening to her words and music led me on a journey into my own heart of darkness to discover the joy and light that may emerge if we are brave enough to take that road. It is worth the trip. Love you, Fran!

A Profile in Courage
Fran Carbonaro’s CD I’m Still Alive is truly a work of art and soul. Born out of a dark and traumatized childhood, this CD is a testament to the power of the grit, determination and courage to heal, to survive and ultimately to thrive. The songs and spoken words are beautiful, haunting, tender and jarring.

I’m Still Alive is a profile in courage and an inspiration to anyone who has lived with trauma

Soul-wrenching and soothing...
In this at once soul-wrenching and soothing healing work of art, Fran Carbonaro displays uncommon courage, grit and passion . These qualities serve to underline her substantial poetic and musical gifts. She uses her talents to call forth and sanctify in words and music what for many have been unspeakable experiences, coated in shock, shame and silence. This music is healing medicine. If you are coping with an abusive past, no matter how long ago, listening to this kindred spirit dig into her depths and unearth the jewels there will help you heal .
