ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
'Levitation' is inspired by the exuberant plurality of the internet as well as by ethnic sounds and also by the heritage of early electronic and synthesizer music. It features 12 tracks, covering a versatile range of calm and meditative, sometimes dense and surprising, but always harmonic music. Based on guitar-synthesizer improvisations and guitar-treatments by Leykam, Meyer extended and arranged the final process.

sophisticated experimental ambient sounds
Frank Meyer and Roman Leykam are back on track with a new work resulting from their improvisations in sound. Guitars and electronics are merged together for a much diversified work inspired by the ‘exuberant plurality of the internet as well as by ethnic sounds and also by the heritage of early electronic and synthesizer music’. Levitation is a diversified opus where sound experiments and manipulated guitar parts have been embellished with a fine taste for ambient impressions. The sound treatments are quite delicate, sometimes subtle and always spiced with a little touch of mystery. Other tracks are more into pure reverie and get pretty close to a kind of cinematographic music style. The previous album Primal Ocean was more experimental while Levitation appears to be more accomplished. It all sounds like the new work is a little less improvised although it remains a minimal experience in sound. I especially like the psychedelic touch hanging over a few tracks, which might be a reference to one of their main sources of inspiration (cf. Brian Eno). Shrouded In Mystery is a little jewel in the genre and a track I can only, but highly recommend. The kind of slow tribal-like rhythm injects an extra element to this great cut. I’m seriously impressed by the global sound production, which becomes a complex procedure from decomposing sounds to the creation of experimental sound standards. Levitation moves from a kind of glasshouse music impression to psychedelic passages to pure sound reverie.
Conclusion: Frank Meyer and Roman Leykam both are familiar artists from the Frank Mark Arts roster, but probably unknown to a wider audience. This album appears to be the right opportunity to get more familiar with the sophisticated, but experimental ambient approach of those artists. Best songs: Shrouded In Mystery, Abstraction, Manic Effect, Percolating Gnosis. Rate: (DP:7)DP. (side-line.com / 1.9.2014)
