Poptosis

by Fraudprophets

Imagine a world where everything is allowed - jazz, barn-burning country, seventies fusion, rock and roots styles - all played with real fire by guys who have a deep musical connection and a respect for the music. 'poptosis' is that, and it's badass.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Los Angeles, CA, 2019 - Fraudprophets, a collaboration between multi-instrumentalist and composer Sean Halley and A-list drummer Nate Morton (seen weekly on NBC’s ‘The Voice’), are ecstatic to announce the release of their debut album ‘Poptosis’. Joined by Bob Reynolds from Snarky Puppy on sax, guitarist Oz Noy, Nashville fiddle ninja Jenee Fleanor and Matt Rohde on Hammond B3, the new record seamlessly blends elements of jazz, pop, rock, country and 70’s fusion into tunes that feel uniquely natural together, which is a result of the long-standing bond between Morton and Halley and their decades-long careers on stage and in the studio…and the gin.

“It probably isn’t the best way to go about it, but we randomly started this whole thing one night by drinking cocktails to a click track”, said Morton. “Not having a plan ended up being a real blessing, as the snippets of music that came out of that evening were free-spirited and fun, and they were infused with personality and our love for each other as musical dorks.” Halley continues, “Nate and I love just about every kind of music, so nothing was off limits if it was a style we felt comfortable with. The same was true for the production - I like big-sounding records, so if we needed a ridiculous Beastie Boys-esque organ-and-drums breakdown for a tune, I’d have to go figure it out.”

LA supersession guitarist Michael Thompson (Backstreet Boys, Toni Braxton, David Foster, Babyface, Shania Twain, etc) agreed, saying, “the tones, the tunes and performances are stellar! It’s the best new instrumental music I’ve heard in ages.”

Drummer Greg Bissionette (David Lee Roth, Ringo Starr, Toto, Los Lobotomies, Santana, etc) should know better as well, but he still said "the new record is fantastic and really musical. All the players are phenomenal - I love the entire disc, but 'Skronktastic' is my favorite!".

Band Bios:

Sean Halley -

A rare chameleon in all things audio, Sean Halley has appeared on record with Vinnie Colaitua, Tony Levin, Jerry Marotta, Michael Thompson, Richard Marx and Michael Manring among many others. Over the past thirty years he has written orchestral music for film and television, been a busy session musician, produced and engineered successful independent records, built facilities and recording gear, created the popular Bachelor program and Production and Recording department at LA College of Music and created media that has been viewed over a million times for multiple music manufacturing companies - all while remaining a respected presenter on all things audio.

"This band has been something that Nate and I have talked about doing for years - removing the need to fit the music into clearly defined little boxes means that we're free to explore whatever we feel comfortable playing.

There was a real sense of joy and fun when we put these tunes together (we DID start it out by drinking to a click, after all!), and I truly hope that it comes across when listening to 'poptosis'. We've had a blast making it, and we can't wait to take it out into the world and play it!"

Nate Morton -

Nate Morton is a drummer's drummer - his pocket has propelled records for artists as varied as Michael Bolton, Kelis and Damian Marley, and he has toured the world backing Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan, Miley Cyrus, Poe, Vanessa Carlton and Paul Stanley and played high-visiblity award shows like both the latin and traditional Grammy Awards, where he appeared alongside the likes of Madonna.

He is the most visible for filling the drum chair in some of the most compelling musical performance television shows of the last twenty years - starting with Rockstar:INXS, Rockstar:Supernova and Rock The Cradle and continuing on to every one of the 400 (!!) episodes of the hit NBC show 'The Voice', which continues to draw millions of fans every week.

"This band started because I got tired of not having an answer when interviewers asked 'hey Nate, what music do you do on your own time?'

Sean and I have a really deep musical connection that comes from ingesting a similar huge pile of recorded music when we were coming up, and from fifteen years of friendship. It really shows on the new record - even when it jumps from a sax tune with brushes to a country barn-burner, it still sounds like us. After spending years in the studio, 'poptosis' is my favorite collection of my own playing - and that's gratifying!.

A fulfilling musical smorgasbord
Fantastic, hyper-musical album full of styles and melodies that keep the listener captivated. The playing on this album is impressive to say the least. Eat a frog will put the skids on what you expect to hear and what is played with its hard hitting chords, blended with chicken-picken country-style guitar that would make Brent Mason take note. “Sad people music” is another great track that is blended with some cerebral guitar playing and some gorgeous sax melodies. A real musical journey and a must listen if you want to hear playing at it’s absolute finest. Sean and Nate are a phenomenal duo and you have to check out this album.

Excellent example of where jazz-rock fusion is heading in the early 21st century
An excellent example of where jazz-rock fusion is heading in the early 21st century, the 2019 CD by L.A. based Fraud Prophets, humourously entitled Poptosis, is a most electrifying instrumental music experience. Essentially a collaboration between multi-instrumentalist Sean Halley and drummer / percussionist Nate Morton, the duo are joined by several guest artists including electric guitar ace Oz Noy and B3 player Matt Rohde. A good example is track one, called "I Think I Just Said That", featuring Sean Halley's well-rounded electric guitar chops. Careening between jazz-rock and funky riffs, held together by a decidedly 1970s instrumental fusion groove, Poptosis is a wake-up call for anyone that might have prematurely written off the power of instrumental jazz-rock in the early days of the millennium.
