ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Freelance Bishops are made up of Steve Giannaros on tenor/alto sax, Justin Piper on guitar, Jeremy Parker on organ and keys, Brian Coakley on bass, and Jay Breen on drums.

The Bishops began three years ago in Lowell, MA, playing to an audience that just couldn't get enough of their vibe.

As they matured and grew into their funky sound they began to fill up rooms of people ready to dance, including most of the major clubs in Boston, such as The House of Blues (Cambridge), and The Middle East among others.

At this moment, they are now poised to bring their funky vibe out to the rest of the world and redefine in the pocket playing wherever they go.

High quality stuff
An excellent CD from start to finish. These guys can flat-out play! "Smack my bishop" is especially sweet. I would love to see these guys live.

Real raw jazz influenced funk that will make you groove
I bought the Freelance Bishops cd at a live show at the House of Blues in Cambridge MA and as I said above in the summary of my review it's real raw jazz influenced funk that'll make you groove. The musical connection between these five guys is amazing. There's not much else to say but CHECK IT OUT!!!!

Oldschool jazz fusion with a twist of lime !!!
These gentlemen have really got it together. The tunes on this gem are tight, calculated, and yet shoot off into an improvisational frenzy without losing the most important factor that sets the Bishops far above other groups along this vein - the groove.

There isn't a mediocre cut on this record... and the bonus track is a surprise to be shared among all good music lovers. I can't believe that they pulled this record off live.

If you don't move some part of your body involuntarily while listening to this, you should go to the hospital - you're probably dead!

One of the best
I saw FLB wayy back in April at the historic Monopole in Plattsburgh New York. They totally blew me away live and I have to say that both their live album and studio album are quite amazing. I just saw them again on Saturday and was reminded of their energy and cool vibes. Both cd's are worth the buy even if you are not sure if you like them, it is deifnately a good investment. I always listen to it on my way to work, when I'm writing papers, and when I am getting ready to go out. Smack My Bishop is an awesome tune along with the rest of the album. Do yourself a favor and check these guys out, you won't be disappointed!

Buy this CD
seriously, you need to buy this cd! If you like GBA, you won't be dissapointed, especially now that they aren't together anymore. Without a doubt Freelance Bishops is a CD everybody should own, even if it's just to pretend you're cool.

Freelance Funk Makes You Feel The Boom!!!
Outstanding styles come together to make you feel the funk of one tremendous band! The Bishops are certainly a force to reckon with when it comes to layin' down the beats and jazzing up the style. Every track has a flow of it's own and pulls the CD together to make it a MUST HAVE for any jazz/funk fan. JRS1's (Parker) fingers slide along the pearly whites puttin' together a sweet Hammond sound, "Chicken Neck" (Coakley) keeps the bass tried and true, Greek Lightning (Giannaros) is a sax machine, Breen on drums & percussion makes you keep wanting more, and Piper on guitar makes the job look easy! Such a freaky funk and jammin' jazz shouldn't be locked up in a CD, catch them live whenever you can, you won't be dissappointed!

improvization that penetrates to the depths of one's soul
My son dragged me off to hear these guys and I was amazed at
what I heard. So I bought the CD, browbeat my friends into
buying the CD (easy to do once they had heard a few cuts),
and even bought extras for Christmas gifts (joyfully received).
The tunes are engaging in their own right, but when these
exceptional musicians begin to improvize on them, the music
penetrates to the depths of one's soul. Especially masterful
is the guitar work. I treat this CD like an AMEX card:
I don't leave home without it.
