Album Notes
In preparing this CD, I had the privilege of listening to hours of recordings, finding the right combination of tracks that would create just the right atmosphere and feel. Now, I believe I've found the best mix of various sounds and styles to represent the juxtaposition of extreme elements that are the cornerstone of fuegokoori.

Fuego koori stand for Fire and Ice

We draw our inspiration and repertoire from Spanish and Latin dance, as well as Chinese, Japanese and South American music. Some of the music we play is written specifically for cello and guitar by classical composer-performers like Joaquin Nin, while other works are not written for cello and guitar, but are originally arrangements for other instruments; like cello and piano or violin and guitar. And in the case of Fantasy, Samba em Preludio and the remaining three works with guitar ensemble on this CD, I freely improvised the cello parts in concert and also quoted from other pieces.

Experience fuego koori - the refreshing juxtaposition of Asian calm and tranquility with flamenco's exuberance and fire!

This recording was compiled from three performances in 2004 and 2005 at the Lutheran Church in Konstanz, Germany. A portion of the proceeds from this CD will go to benefit Helft uns helfen, a charity organization that has several on-going projects helping school children in Nicaragua.

Helft uns helfen helps rebuild schools and continues to provide support in many ways, including paying for teachers' salaries, books and supplies as well as food and drink for the children.

fuegokoori is a proud sponsor of Helft uns helfen, e.V.

We've incorporated a brand new sound into the mix, engaging the collaboration of the Konstanz Guitar Ensemble, one of the great amateur groups who can play like the pros. It was a pleasure to work with them!

Listen for the fabulous new combination of cello + guitar ensemble in Milonga del Angel, Black Orpheus, Danca da Saudade and Rumba Catalan!

Asturiana and Andaluza are the final two movements of Joaquin Nin's Spanish Suite, a four-movement work that explores the diversity of musical styles in old Spain. One can almost taste the hot summer in Asturiana and feel the sizzle of flamenco in Andaluza.

Be transported to far away cultures and enjoy the vivid imagery in Sakura for solo guitar, Wild Grass for solo cello and Fantasy for cello and guitar.

Niccolo Paganini's Cantabile embodies the outpouring of affection, a pure and innocent expression of undying love.

Dance along with the solo cello in Sardana by cellist, Gaspar Cassado.

Astor Piazzolla's music continues to find its way into our programming, and on this fuego koori CD, we feature three absolute gems: Nightclub 1960, Milonga del Angel, Chiquilin de Bachin and Nightclub 1960.

Danca da Saudade and Rumba Catalan are guitar ensemble standards that were just begging for a cello line! And we hope you enjoy our version of Black Orpheus and Sambe em Preludio. Thanks again to the Konstanz Guitars!

Please have fun with this compilation of great music written by master composers, all of whom were also virtuoso performers in their own right. Sit back and let the music carry you to different worlds and hopefully, it will inspire you to imagine the beauty and richness of humanity as expressed through music.

The combination of cello, guitar and guitar ensemble never sounded so colorful and exciting before!

Here is the text that accompanies Wild Grass by Zhou Long

When I am silent, I feel replete; as I open my mouth to speak, I am conscious of emptiness.

The past life has died. I exult over its death, because fom this I know that it once existed. The dead life has decayed. I exult over its decay, because from this I know that it has not been empty.

From the clay of life abandoned on the ground grow no lofty trees, only wild grass.
For that I am to blame.

Wild grass strikes no deep roots, has no beautiful flowers and leaves, yet it imbibes dew, water, and the blood and flesh of the dead, although all try to rob it of life. As long as it lives it is trampled upon and mown down, until it dies and decays.

But I am not worried; I am glad. I shall laugh aloud and sing.

I love my wild grass, but I detest the ground, which decks itself with wild grass.
A subterranean fire is spreading, raging, underground. Once the molten lava breaks through the earth's crust, it will consume all the wild grass and lofty trees, leaving nothing to decay.

But I am not worried; I am glad. I shall laugh aloud and sing.

Heaven and earth are so serene that I cannot laugh aloud or sing. Even if they were not so serene, I probably could not wither. Between light and darkness, life and death, past and future, I dedicate this tussock of wild grass as my pledge to friend and foe, man and beast, those whom I love and those whom I do not love.

For my own sake and for the sake of friend and foe, man and beast, those whom I love and those whom I do not love, I hope for the swift death and decay of this wild grass. Otherwise, it means I have not lived, and this would truly be more lamentable than either death or decay.

A prince . . .
"Sometimes you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a prince!" I purchased this album on a whim . . . I do that, I take some chances when something looks promising or intriguing, and, yes, I "kiss a lot of frogs", but this time I found a "prince". The album is at times haunting, at times lyrical, but at all times excellent with that special energy always present in a live recording.
