Greatest Hits 1984-2004

by The Fugs

These sixteen songs represent the very best of this historic band's albums and CDs from 1984 through 2004. It's heavy on humor and satire, with protest songs and poetry backed by hot vocals and excellent music of several genres, including rock and folk,

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Fugs were founded in late 1964 at the Peace Eye Bookstore in the Lower East Side of New York City. The Fugs performed off-Broadway and in concert halls in the United States and Europe throughout the rest of the 1960s, and then after a hiatus to get their heads together, founders Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg began almost yearly reunion concerts beginning in 1984, and continuing to this day.

The Fugs, with their combinations of poetry, rock, satire, manifestoes, folk anthems, anti-war anarcho-socialdemocratic- hasidic-hankwilliams songs have placed themselves in the forefront of forward-thinking American and World music.

Fugs founders Sanders and Kupferberg have had, for the last 21 years, an excellent band consisting of Steve Taylor on vocals and guitars, Coby Batty on vocals and percussion, and Scott Petito on bass, strings, guitars. Our albums and CDs have been recorded at Petito's NRS Studios.

Film Credits
I hope everyone who saw "Burn After Reading" stuck around for the credits. "CIA Man" played during the credits and, well, really tied the movie together. It's good to hear the Fugs recorded well and upgraded in performance quality (I have the old original ESP albums, and are they ever crude!). And I'm happy to know the Fugs are still around and still creative. Great collection.

Nice album, but not enough new material
There certainly isn't a bad track on this collection and the sound quality is commendable. In that regard, it deserves 5 stars. However, since the majority of the music presented here is already available, there isn't enough new material to make it truly valuable to Fugs collectors. I that regard, it deserves 3 stars. I bought it because I am a completist.

This would also make a fine introduction to newcomers, although I can't imagine that there would a lot of people that fall into that category.

As is evidenced by the fact that a DVD of a live recording is on the way, one would imagine that there is some unreleased live material in the can that should have been released instead of the "best of" CD. Hopefully, that day will come soon.
