ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
THE CD SPHERE...
... is an audiophile album of vocal gems with some sparse instrumental accompaniment. You will find connections with ancient and with ethnic music, with theatre and ritual. There is a lot of improvisation, and some compositions too—the real excitement happens when both meet. Several pieces highlight the fabulous overtone singing technique of two outstanding masters in this field.

THE GROUP....
.... Parafonia grew out of a vocal laboratory, and present, for the first time, some of the finest results of years of experimentaion. It is directed by vocalist and musicologist Mark van Tongeren, an authority on overtone singing, unusual vocal techniques and the music of Siberia and Mongolia. SPHERE can be regarded as a follow-up to his solo CD Paraphony—Extended Harmonic Techniques (2001, http://cdbaby.com/cd/fusica1), and shows what else paraphony is or can be: an exploration of sound, resonance and spatiality; a dynamic expression of the impossibility of silence. The 13 tracks cover a wide range of styles, yet are united by the quest for new musical directions and the intimate environment of a deserted chapel.

THE MUSICIANS
Rollin Rachele : a vocalist by birth (in the USA, but pretty nomadic eversince). Fully-fledged Indian classical singer, one of the earliest and most gifted overtone singers around. Bach? Barbershop? Gregorian? You name it, he’s done it! Rachele’s soaring tenor and fluid melodic lines are a true delight to hear again and again.

Sinta Wullur : well-known Dutch composer and multi-faceted vocalist. Particularly unique on SPHERE is her combination of a Sundanese classical song with overtone singing on Pàla

Gregor Schulenburg : German up-and-coming flutist and throat singer, with a taste for ethnic & avantgarde music

Jessica de Boer : prize-winning performer and multi-media artist, Jessica actually keeps all of us together

Juri Cainero : brilliant young percussionist in many styles. Constantly performing and exploring music between Ulaan Bataar and New Mexico

Mark van Tongeren : founder and director, tireless explorer of the voice and harmonics as a singer and as music scholar. Parafonia is born out of his PhD research project entitled Overtone Singing and the Thresholds of Audibility.
