Album Notes
"Gabbie McGee’s music is to the soul what a jumbo pot of southern Gumbo is to
your stomach; an endless supply of perfectly blended soul, gospel and jazz. The
secret ingredients lie within her flavorful lyrics layered over a comfortable
bed of soulful melodies that are sure to have you coming back for more time and
time again. Mississippi’s daughter is my new favorite dish.”
~Lisa Eddie-Rimpson, Author of "The Gift"

What is Mississippi's Daughter?

Mississippi‘s Daughter tells the story of my life and all the places, situations and circumstances I’ve traveled through. We all have a place where we begin our journey and for me Mississippi is where my roots happened to be planted. I named the album “Mississippi’s Daughter” because that is who and what I am. I am a product of my environment. I was raised by a single mother and her parents, so I sing like my grandfather; I’ve got faith like my grandmother and a story to tell just like my mother.

There are so many people; teachers, church leaders, friends, cousins; school yard bullies ; old boyfriends…so many things in Mississippi that are responsible for shaping me into the woman I have become. This is my way of thanking everyone without excluding anyone. The songs paint a picture of me and display all of the ingredients that come together to make “The Gabbie Cake”. I'm a country girl traveling the world. I love to eat hot water cornbread and buttermilk while wearing slinky stilettos on my way to a late night jam session in a smoke filled jazz club in Southeast Asia. I’m just a girl from Greenville, Mississippi living her dream. ♥

Who are your musical influences?

There are so many musicians/vocalists who have influenced me in one way or another over the years; it’s hard to only name a few. But I’ll try…I am a huge fan of Nina Simone. I adore the depth and textures of her voice and I love how honest she was in her lyrics. I admire and appreciate artist like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, B.B. King, Phoebe Snow, Roy Ayers, Cassandra Wilson, George Benson, Will Downing, Rachelle Ferrell, Maysa Leak, Lizz Wright, Casting Crowns, Fred Hammond, Lalah Hathaway, Ledisi and Chrisette Michelle. I love vocal acrobatics and technique; but I am a push over for tone. I’m also drawn to creative writing; I think that’s why I’m drawn to the artists I mentioned, they all have great voices with beautifully meaningful lyrics.

Finish this statement, Music is...

one of the most powerful means of expression known to man. It is the one thing no matter where you are in the world; what culture you’re from or what language you speak; music can be that one common denominator, it is the bridge that brings people together.

Who will this album speak to:

This album will speak to anyone who’s had to start from scratch; whether it’s baking a cake or building a house. Say you want to draw a picture; you’ve got the pencil but you don’t have any paper…what do you do? If your answer is draw on the walls, the floor, the sidewalk or any other surface that will give you an opportunity to write “the” vision; then this album will speak to you. It will also speak to you if you like good, quality music. ♥

What are two of your favorite tracks from this album?

It wouldn’t be fair to the other 12 tracks to only name two as my favorites. I don’t want to show favoritism; I love them all. These songs are like my children, I love them differently but equally. My advice to listeners is to just buy them all...please don't separate my children! ♥

Great work...
Keep making this kind of music. It is what we need. Blessings to you my sister.

Well done Gabbie...
Beautiful work. The lyrics, the production...I felt as if I was with you on every step of your journey!

Mississippi's Daughter is a pleasing palette of many colors wrapped in a soulful package. "Afterwhile, Afterwhile," spiced with a cool jazz flair, sums up her optimistic attitude about life by quoting a verse from the popular spiritual, "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands." The 80s-flavored quiet storm ballad, "Help Wanted," exposes McGee's vulnerable side: "Don't believe me when I say I'm fine." Her eclectic influences from Ella to Ledisi run all over the ambitious "SOUL.JAZZ.AMPLIFIED./How I Got Over It"; a musical menu of funk, rock, jazz and Broadway. Finally, the core of Mississippi's Daughter is the gospel-fueled "Oak Tree," McGee's moving salute to several generations of her family. McGee focuses on feeling right at home on Mississippi's Daughter and brings her audience on this wonderful tour.

Genius (

In an industry full of recycled samples, overused soundbites, fancy editing, and way TOO much Auto Tune, Gabbie McGee brings back a sense of true artistry. With a blend of Jazz, Blues, Gospel, and a little bit of Alternative Rock, Mississippi's Daughter has something for everyone. Full of personality, great writing and excellent production Gabbie takes you on a personal trip though her life! I recommend this album to anyone who loves real music! MISSISSIPPI'S DAUGHTER ROCKS!!!

"Mississippi's Daughter" is unique, inspiring, and so, very heart-warming to hear. As I sat and listened to the words and the melody of the song, I began to reminisce on my life as a child growing up in MS as well as living there as an adult, striving to be the best person I could be. Hats off to you, dear Sister.:)Congratulations!
