Side A: Bound By A Thread

"Bound by a Thread" is a journey. As the song begins, you slowly push open the creaking door to some mystical attic. You clear away the cobwebs to find a dormant old clock sitting on a shelf. You wind it up and it comes to life, the second hand keeping time as the story unfurls. This is a song about our connection throughout eternity.

I have always been interested in spirituality, but lately I've been especially intrigued by the concept of reincarnation. What does it mean to say we are interconnected? Do we owe each other karmic debts? How can we help to right the wrongs of the past in this lifetime? These are the queries of "Bound by a Thread".

The arrangement for this track is built on layered textures of violin, augmented by the spare but impactful contributions of keyboard (Dave Mehling), guitar (Al Church), drums (Marty Dosh), and bass (Andrew Foreman). My voice is meant to hover above this music like a feather searching for a place to land. The bittersweet song builds slowly, carefully towards a powerful yet hopeful resolution. The questions might be difficult, but the answer is simple.

Side B: Dark to Light and Dark Again

Each of us has a unique body with which to experience the world. But no matter what vessel you were given at birth, it will eventually break down. This could be cause for despair unless you realize that true joy in life stems from helping each other along the way.

"Dark to Light and Dark Again" is a joyful, even playful, take on our journey from the cradle to the grave. It is about as far from home as I've ever been in terms of songwriting and vibe – the sound is vaguely reminiscent of CCR or The Band – but it was definitely a fun ride. In fact, it's an all-out jam!

For this song I am backed by fellow Minnesota musicians Dave Mehling (keys), Al Church (guitar), Martin Dosh (drums) and Andrew Foreman (bass). They infuse a boisterous energy to the track that will hopefully leave you feeling just a little bit lighter and a little more connected.
