There is a particular sound in music that is called "The Woman Tone". It is a musical tone that is dreamed about, aspired to, longed for.

The Woman Tone is variously described as "smooth and bassy"; "brown, sensuous"; "basically warm, smooth"; "the deep dark melody tone". The term has become an acknowledged musical shorthand (Google "woman tone" and you are rewarded with over a quarter of a million references!). Mostly, musicians, and mostly, guitar players, try to deconstruct the various technicalities that go into finding this holy grail.

I was introduced to the concept of the "woman tone" and those who seek it, by my own tone-stalking, guitar-playing, husband. And it was on my mind when I initially listened to Gail Gallagher's first full-length CD.

"Nuts to all of them!" I thought, with their aching for the unreachable, because what you hear when you listen to every cut on "Warm as a Late Spring Day" is a delicious, smooth, honeyed, sometimes deep, sometimes bright, sometimes sensuous -- womanly tone! Beguiling, inviting, passionate, compassionate womanly tone. Not an abstract ideal to be hunted down -- it's in the very sound, in the right here and now, of Gail's voice.

When Gail sings, she does exactly what she does when you're with her in person: she looks you right in the eyes with her own wonderful green ones, and makes a deep, clear, generous, focused connection. On every song in this gorgeous album, she is singing to you. Only you. And she opens herself -- and you, along with her -- to the full womanly experience: In "Shall We Dance", an experienced lady of the world delicately admits, "...on the clear understanding that this kind of thing can happen" as she invites you to ponder the consequences of stepping out to music; a maternal longing informs the lullaby of "My Favorite Things"; the spiritual female prays with and for you on "Bali Ha'i": for your own special hopes, your own special dreams. And the girl-next-door, the one who knows her way around a worm and a hook, is pretty emphatic that she'd "love to go out fishin’” in "Cheek to Cheek" (there's something very endearing about that emphasis!).

This is all about profound love: love for timeless melodies and words, especially the American songbook; unfailing love for family, friends and fans. Those passions, along with Gail's steady good humor, are in every grace note on this wonderful album. It's rich with her romantic, lush, womanly tone, a tone as warm as a late spring day.
