Album Notes
Galen Fous is a Portland based, innovative, acoustic guitar stylist and singer/songwriter. His music is compellingly original and combines elements of jazz, classical, latin, brazilian, celtic, contemporary folk, rock and more into a modern fusion of traditional genres. The songs are rich in mythos and emotion lyrically and musically…held by unique chording, diverse rhythms, and an amazing finger-style technique developed over the last 40 years. Sacred Ground is enhanced by the superb upright bass of Ryan Babichuk, and conservatory trained horn/woodwind player Mitch Imori on english horn, oboe, clarinet, flute, tenor and soprano sax.

Sampling of Reviews

“Galen Fous, master guitarist, is one of those musicians who quietly flies below the radar in PDX… but listen closely to what Fous plays as a soloist or with his quartet and you’ll hear a vast network of influences coming to bear through his unique finger-picked style. Galen.solo.vintageplazaThere’s a touch of Pat Metheny’s fusion lyricism, some Fahey-style folk, and even a bit of post-jazzish tonality reminiscent of artists like the Durutti Column and early Everything but the Girl.”- Robert Ham, Willamette Week ( 2012)

“The key to Galen Fous’s music is the way he plays the guitar. With colorful, textured chord voicing’s and free-flowing rhythms, Fous’s acoustic style provides an excellent foundation for his own vocals, upright bass, as well as other melody instruments such as oboe, sax or flute. When it all comes together, the result is something Fous himself has described as “Mythic Acoustic Fusion”, and I doubt I could come up with a better description of it in fewer words. All that said, one really must see him play live to realize the compelling nature of his music’. – Tim Karplus, The Portland Pick (Aug 07, 2012)

“Galen Fous is a well-kept Portland secret. He was kind and great to work with but it was his music that made him stand out at our event. OHSU’s Kohler Pavilion never sounded so good. Accompanying the breath-taking view, Galen’s acoustic sound created a smooth and welcoming ambiance for our guests.” Andrew Shayde, Special Events Coordinator- Cascade AIDS Project’s AIDS Walk Kick-Off Party

“Galen provided the ideal musical accompaniment for our wine tasting event – harmonious, melodic, at times ethereal. All great attributes for wine tasting and music.” Bill Holloran, Holloran Vineyard

“Galen, countless of our distinguished guests at the Oregon Lions Foundation open house commented on your musical talent…and the festive yet relaxed ambiance it brought to our event.” Eliza Bone, PR Director, Oregon Lions Speech and Hearing Foundation

“Galen, we appreciated your bringing your considerable guitar talents to entertain our distinguished guests at thegalen.solo.startbucks Midsummer’s Nights Dream charity event. Thank you so much for enlivening our evening with your wonderful music.” Jennifer Wessling, Home Builder’s Assos, event coordinator

“Galen, I love your music. You bring in a huge array of musical influences (jazz, blues, latin, celtic, and other fusions) and do an amazing job balancing them all out.” Noah Bernstein, Camelia Lounge in the Pearl.
