ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This debut recording from Gathering Sparks is a six-song gem, reflecting the simple, yet rich harmonies and instrumentation of the trio's live sound. The band members each take a turn at songwriting and singing lead, highlighting the fact that these are three solid musicians in their own right. Together, they are a folk-roots powerhouse, and fans of vocal three-part harmony should take note!

THE STORY BEHIND THE BAND & THE ALBUM
A shared love of harmony, group singing, and the craft of songwriting was the catalyst for a one-time, triple-bill concert featuring Eve Goldberg, Jane Lewis & Sam Turton. That night there was a special click—the first “spark” of something bigger…

These musicians loved the magic that came from the gathering of their songs, voices, instruments and styles, so they scheduled another show...and another. After an inspiring, fun-filled year of playing together, they have grown into a full-fledged trio, and are excited to share this recording that captures a little bit of the sound and energy of their live performances.

SONG NOTES

I AIN'T FINISHED WITH THIS JOURNEY YET (written & sung by Eve Goldberg)
Oliver Schroer was a brilliant fiddler and composer who left us far too early. His passion for life and artistic expression, even at the end of his journey, inspired Eve to write this song.

SPIRITS IN THE GRAVEYARD (written & sung by Jane Lewis)
This song has been in the Gathering Sparks repertoire since the beginning, and Eve’s banjo gives it that extra other-worldly flavour—we just had to record it!

LOUISIANA BLUES (written & sung by Sam Turton)
Slide guitar has been Sam's favourite style for many years, and this song was written when he was discovering the joys of that sound. It’s a celebration of late-night jams, old-time dance halls, and the mystical trance of the blues.

RIGHT HERE (written by Sam Turton, sung by Jane Lewis)
We love to encourage our audiences to sing along as much as possible, and this song of Sam’s is one of the best for that. He does a gospel-style version in F#, so Jane kidnapped the song and we did it here in the people-friendly key of C.

DO YOU WANT TO GET MARRIED (written & sung by Eve Goldberg)
Eve has been singing this one for years without any other voices, but when Sam and Jane heard her strumming it on the uke, they felt a strong urge to add harmonies and a Gathering Sparks arrangement was born.

IN FOR THE NIGHT (written & sung by Sam Turton)
Modern life has become so intense, both in exciting and frightening ways, that Sam sometimes wishes he was a furry little fellow who could slip into his cozy burrow and sleep until a new & better spring arrives.
