Album Notes
Genesis – The Early Years, is a CD compilation of songs collected from Mary Gauthier\'s first three releases, and also includes two previously unreleased tracks. The tracks have been re-mastered by Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle) in Nashville TN. This CD is not available in stores, and is only being offered at live shows and CD Baby.

Rarely is a more interesting story more frankly told than that of Mary Gauthier. (That\'s \"go-shay,\" by the way.) Given up at birth by a mother she never knew, Mary bounced around right from the top and was adopted by parents in Thibodaux, LA. She was a classic wild child – hit a hard bottom and straightened out at age 30. Studied Philosophy at L.S.U., then attended Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, and founded Boston\'s first Cajun restaurant.

Three big turnarounds encapsulate the story of Mary: rising above a dangerously errant youth, getting sober, and becoming a professional and heralded singer songwriter by not writing her first songs until her mid-thirties. That, and then writing so well from such a visceral and gut wrenching place that it resonates with the press, her heroes, and the audience alike. Gauthier\'s stock in trade is deep portraiture of the disenfranchised and edgier characters among us, and the darker corners of the heart and soul. She shows the hard-earned knowledge of herself in her understanding and compassion for the stories of others, which she tells so well.

Tracks: Long Way To Fall / Our Lady Of The Shooting Stars / Evangeline / Camelot Motel / Sugar Cane / I Drink / Karla Faye / Drag Queens In Limousines / Different Kind Of Gone / Goodbye / Christmas In Paradise / GD HIV / Ways Of The World / I Ain’t Got No Home (live, previously unreleased) / I Don’t Know Nothing About Love (live, previously unreleased).

A Must Own!
I only discovered Mary Gauthier after the \"Mercy Now\" CD came out and started generating quite a buzz. The more I listened to that particular CD, the more I liked it so I had to pick up some others, and I chose \"Genesis.\" I have had this CD in my car CD player ever since. I just can not get enough of it! Her songwriting is absolutely poetic, haunting and beautiful, and her voice and the music lends itself perfectly to the words. I especially love \"Christmas in Paradise\", \"Gd HIV\" and \"I Ain\'t Got No Home.\" The songs remind me of Woody Guthrie or Bob Dylan or Janis Ian...REAL storytelling. I feel like I\'ve discovered the voice of my generation.

Yes, I know it is a collection of songs we already know. But it is a compelling CD nonetheless. I think the opening song, \"Long Way to Fall\" is becoming one of my favorite Mary songs, really, though \"Karla Faye\" is in the running, too. I am right now waiting arrival of my new Genesis CD, so I have to play these over and over again until it comes. :-)

I am writing just after the Republican Convention where Sarah Palin was introduced and described as a person you would like to get to know. I have no such desire, but I can tell you that I want to know Mary Gauthier! She has the most interesting story that I have heard, and each time I hear one of her songs, I know it comes out of her own heart and experiences, even if she still has not completely resolved all those things in her heart yet. I sincerely hope that she is well and fine, emotionally, and has come throught her apparently agonizing life.

But I do know that her music is just about the best I have ever heard. I was a great fan of Pearl back in the sixties, but Mary is far better as a singer and musician than Janis was or would have ever been.

Once again, I am impressed by the band and the sounds that I hear on these songs. I don\'t think anyone gives enought credit to the excellent music, however simple, embellishes Mary\'s voice and lyrics. Good going, I say, to the producer of Mary\'s music.
