Album Notes
The title "Winter turns to Springtime." is based on a teaching by the 13th century Japanese Buddhist reformer Nichiren. in a letter he wrote to a devoted follower, he states:

"Those who believe in the Lotus Sutra are as if in winter, but winter always turns to spring....(WND, pg. 536)

In these troubling and tumultuous times, we must never lose hope for the future. I hope that this song will convey the message that no matter what we are going through now, we each possess the power to win in our lives, to promote peace in the world and in our communities, and to foster courage in each other. In the bible it is written, "This too shall pass." In
Nichiren Buddhism, we say, "...winter always turns to spring."

On lead vocals are two sensational artists. They are Warren Tipton and Yolanda Chaidez. They are also the lead singers for the band "Together," one of the premier show bands in the Chicagoland area led by Ray Flores. Warren and Yolanda are remarkable artists who have developed a wonderful musical chemistry throughout the years that I believe was captured on this recording. You will be hearing much more from them I guarantee.

The saxophone soloist creating the unique ambiance in the background of the title song is Michael Carson. Carson is a master of his craft and also a member of the group "Together." The sax part that you hear in the title track, "Winter Turns to Springtime," is the intermingling of only two "takes" or tracks even before the vocal parts were recorded. He is a consummate professional, an improvisational genius, and my dear friend.

The arrangement is credited to my "nephew" Will Bailey Jr. He contributed the drum and percussion arrangements, as well as the vocal arrangements and musical effects to the track. Will is a brilliant arranger and songwriter who is now based in Hollywood, California.

The song "Daddy G. & Uncle D." is dedicated to my father Garrett Livingston Cope and my "uncle" David Thompson.
Their legacy, and the legacy of all our ancestors, live within each of us.

The song "Easy Open," means to open the "poetic spirit" within each of us. The poet and philosopher Daisaku Ikeda states:

"The poetic spirit has the power to 'retune' and reconnect a discordant, divided world."

What he is describing is an openness to the world; a vital sense of the connection between one's life and the life of all living things. The universal language of music unites all human beings regardless of ethnic background or nationality. Open up to the music. It's easy.

"Make It Good" is an experiment in music synthesis of the continuity of life Because we have lived countless lifetimes before this present life, in this one let's... "Make It Good."

Thanks to John Carpenter, master sound engineer and founder of Thunderclap Studios in Hammond, Indiana. It was an awesome experience recording there. I shall return...

Thanks to Mom, brother Mike, family and friends.
Special thanks to Warren, Yolanda, Carson, and Willie Jr., Ray Flores and the "Together" group, Val at VT Creative, Jeffrey Carlisle for the photo and "Bud" Titak for the photo editing, Daisaku Ikeda and all SGI members everywhere.

It's a snowy and cold Indiana morning and I can't help thinking...

Winter Turns To Springtime
Every single time
Soon the birds of spring will be singing all around
All around

Enjoy the music.
