Album Notes

Geoff Hartwell is a scorching guitar player, songwriter, teacher and clinician.

Growing up, he studied guitar fiercely and was playing NYC venues like CBGB's, Kennys Castaways and the Lion's Den by the time he was in his teens. In addition to studying music full-time at Hartwick College, he was also a Samuel J. Nelson scholarship recipient in recognition of his academic aptitude. After music school, Hartwell toured internationally in Europe with a rock musical production of "The Birds" and travelled through Australia and New Zealand.

Geoff Hartwell began to acquire his skills in the recording studio at The Loft Recording Studios while working on Shanachie Records sessions for Debbie Davies' "Round Every Corner" and The New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars' "Fresh Out the Past" albums in addition to sessions produced by Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Richard Shindell).

Geoff Hartwell is a long-time faculty member at the National Guitar Workshop where he's taught seminars in Austin, Texas and Chicago, Illinois with special guests Sonny Landreth and Cindy Cashdollar. At NGW he's also shared the stage with Blues Legends such as Jimmy Thackery, formerly of Muddy Waters' Band. Geoff was excited to share the stage again with Sonny on tour dates including B.B. King's in NYC, and to collaborate with him on the recordings which yielded the new CD, "Hate To See You Go".

Geoff Hartwell has appeared in international magazines such as Guitar World and Vintage Guitar Magazine. Recent television performances include appearing as a “Naked Hippie” in a hugely popular skit on Saturday Night Live (which was chosen to open the “Best of the Year” DVD), and playing guitar for the theme to the Discovery Channel show “Outward Bound”, as well as interview/performances on The Guitar Show with Mike Byrnes, and "The Listening Room" on RNN.

Geoff Hartwell has a Keyman endorsement with Hamer Guitars. He also proudly endorses D'Addario strings, Gold Tone Acoustic Instruments and Pigtronix Effects and is sponsored by Sam Ash Music.

In addition to maintaining a busy clinic and teaching schedule, Geoff Hartwell continues to perform up to 200 nights per year.

"Guitar slinger/songwriter Geoff Hartwell's debut CD
'Perfect Stranger' is a true testimonial to his
obvious love and talent with both the sonic and the
sonnet, the searing and the soft".
Cindy Cashdollar, the world's greatest lapsteel and Dobro artist

"He's my hope for the future...I can't say enough good stuff about him. The really cool thing about Geoff is that he's got all the chops but he's got SOUL."
Sonny Landreth - Slide Guitar Heavyweight Champion

"There's something incredibly satisfying about a guitar lick that gallops up the strings and tags every sweet note in it's path...Saucy!"
Jude Gold - Guitar Player Magazine

Geoff Hartwell is the greatest blues-rock, slide-guitar player I've ever heard, bar none.
Roger Z. - MORE SUGAR! Magazine

Geoff Hartwell's new album, "Hate To See You Go", features his long-time touring band and an incredible lineup of special guests that includes slide guitar legend Sonny Landreth, Bari sax genius Dana Colley (of the influential band Morphine), and Lapsteel wizard Cindy Cashdollar (from Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Ryan Adams and Asleep at the Wheel).

Geoff Hartwell's debut CD, "Perfect Stranger" is also available through www.geoffhartwell.com as well as his Slide Guitar instructional DVD "Ultimate Slide Guitar: Essential Slide Techniques" which has been featured in Guitar World Magazine, and Vintage Guitar Magazine.

This cd is amazing - Geoff and the band (including Rich) outdid themselves
This cd came quite close to home, considering that two of the band members, Geoff and Rich, have been my guitar teachers for many years. I definitely expected good material from the start, but I was totally taken aback. This is really awesome music and the cd continues to amazes me. Starting with "Mirage," with guitar work that holds your attention from the beginning, it continues with a really gripping song called "Godfather" and an equally amazing track, "Song For Mary". The lyrics are extremely well done, moving into some of the later tracks like "Star," "Crazy Me," and "Flying In Place". The whole cd is fluid and it doesn't lack interest anywhere. This cd is a MUST pick-up for ANYONE interested in good music. To my guitar teachers - Geoff Hartwell and bass player Rich Kelly - your band rocks out of this cd. I can't wait to see you in concert, as music like this only gets better in person :)

Perfect Strangers
Personal lyrics, great acoustic & slide guitar with excellent band "back up". Loved it! Looking forward to more CD issues from the GHB including blues with slide guitar.

Geoff Hartwell was my teacher at the national guitar workshop and let me tell ya...that guy is frickin amazing. his guitar work is so impressive that you will actually throw up from excitement. and that's not even using half of his total talent. deal with that...i dare you.

This CD is awesome!
This CD is awesome. The 6th song, "Where I Want to Be", is my personal favorite, but everything else on it is awesome as well. Geoff has such an incredible ability for the way he rhymes... You have to like it. End of story.

I love this record!
Although independently produced by guitar legend Matt Smith, it sounds like a big-budget, major label release -- and a country one at that. Hartwell earned a local reputation as a major shredder on both regular and slide guitar. But you wouldn't know it from listening to this CD. He builds most songs on his acoustic guitar. Like a Hostess cupcake, the icing consists of the tastiest and most subtle of guitar licks. Keyboardist Chris Burke provides the smoothe, creme filling. Bassist Rich Kelly and drummer J.J. Clarke serve as the rich, dark, chocolate cake. Together they create a deep and powerful undertow that reminds me of body surfing on a rough day at Montauk Point. One second, you control the wave. The next, a rip tide drags you inexorably out to sea.

It's not just Hartwell's songwriting prowess that impresses. His distinctive tenor voice perfectly captures the angst of his material.

The Geoff Hartwell Band outperform expectations with their stunning debut record. I know Hartwell recorded and re-recorded endlessly. His perseverance and perfection pay exceptional dividends.

Soulful modern rock
This CD gives a glimpse of what modern rock can be with a connection to blues and classic rock roots, soulful performance and musicians with chops. It works great and stands out from among the crowded pack of sound-alike songs presently on the radio.

This CD has the right mix of music. Anyone who admires the work of artists such as Dave Matthews would be well served by purchasing this little gem. I have found each track to be thought provoking and inspiring.

Amazing. A perfect infusion of contemporary and old school rock!
There's little that I can say about this cd that won't make me sound like I'm swooning. I love this guys ability to speak from an original place without using tired electronically powered harmonics or digitally remastered sounds the performer has never heard in person.

His songwriting skills are refreshingly apt, considering what an amazing guitar player Hartwell is (he's the best slideplayer of his generation!).

Get this album people, you'll be blown away!

Finally Jefe!
The world has waited, most unknowingly, for this man's voice and music to be at their fingertips, playable at a whim. Christmas came early this year. Thank you... mine's stuck at 11.
