ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
I’ve always been a big fan of singer-songwriters and the music that’s called Americana or Roots these days. I sought out the guy that wrote the songs that Blackie & the Rodeo Kings sang on their first album: High or Hurtin’. I found Willie P. Bennett playing in Fred Eaglesmith’s band and started following the band all over Canada and down to Vermont and Texas. I met lots of great artists from all over the continent and listened to and laughed and partied with them around campfires, motel parking lots and backyard house concerts.

In early 2009, I made a lifestyle change that kept me away from live music for a while. I couldn’t stay away long though, and found a new appreciation for the music and artists that make the music I love. I’ve always wanted to hang around the creators of this music so I started creating my own, helped in no small part by attending a few of Lori Yate’s Creative Genius Songwriting Workshops in Hamilton, Ontario. These songs are about my life and the lives of people I’ve met along the way. After getting some good feedback on the songs I decided it was time to make an album.
I asked one of my favourite songwriters, Brock Zeman to produce and he brought his crack band along to fill out the sound. Brock added harmony vocals, played acoustic guitar, bass and piano while Blair Hogan kills it on electric guitar, mandolin, and piano as well with Dylan Roberts playing the drums. These guys are my favourite band to go see anywhere so it was/is a thrill to hear them on this record. I think you’ll feel the same way.

The album is called Music From Big Muddy because Big Muddy is the name of Brock’s studio and the roads that lead to it reminded me of the area around Woodstock and Saugerties, New York where the band recorded Music From Big Pink. I live in Woodstock, Ontario and every member of The Band except Levon Helm grew up within 30 miles of here. Robbie Robertson in Brantford and Toronto, Richard Manuel in Stratford, Garth Hudson in London and my musical hero, Rick Danko in Simcoe. I saw The Band a few times and made my way down to Levon’s Midnight Ramble three times and ran out to Big Pink a couple of those times. It was a natural title that my first album recorded with my favourite band at a studio called Big Muddy would be titled as a tribute to one of the greatest debut albums ever.
I hope you’ll enjoy Music From Big Muddy.
