Album Notes

A collection of soulful and reflective solo piano works ranging from fresh interpretations of music by Beethoven, Elliott Smith and Bob Marley (and more) to insightful and buoyant original compositions to startlingly inspired improvisations. McRae’s genre bending style has increasingly defied categorization and expertly blends jazz, blues, classical, rock (and more) to produce something entirely unique and beautiful.

The recording was made on the magnificent Fazioli F228 and F308 (the largest concert grand in the world) at Pianoforte Chicago. “I’ve had the good fortune of playing many Fazioli’s over the years” McRae says “and they are absolutely the finest pianos I’ve played.”

While the first have of the CD comprises originals and covers, the second half – “The Other Side” – is solely improvisations (or “spontaneous compositions” as McRae likes to call them). The entire recording is unedited with no reverb, pre-amps or compression added. “I wanted to make as honest and intimate recording as possible, to make the listener feel like they were in my living room.” McRae states, “more and more I feel true beauty resides in the imperfections.”

This recording is an embodiement of McRae’s desire to grow closer to nature – as an artist and a person. “There’s nothing as beautiful, honest or awe-inspiring as nature. It’s where we’re from, who we are.”
