Album Notes
"When I Sat Down to Play the Piano" is a collection of original, instrumental compositions inspired by the poetry of Al Purdy. Pianist Gerry Shatford has crafted eight compelling melodies that reflect the swaggering, muscular rhythms of Purdy's language. The compositions are programmatic insofar as each reflects the mood and character of the poem from which it drew its inspiration. Listeners are invited to let each composition take them on a musical journey, discovering new "convergences" with each repeated listening.

For these recordings Gerry Shatford is accompanied by two of Canada's finest rhythm section players: bassist Neil Swainson and drummer Terry Clarke. Listeners will also appreciate the crystal clear sound of Toronto's Inception Sound Studios.

Generous financial support was provided by the Ontario Arts Council, an agency of the government of Ontario.
