Album Notes
"There's Only one reason for this album-the music. We're into live music at Charlotte's Web - like to see folks get together and play. That's what happened on this album - it's all here, it's all up front and it's great because the musicians are great and the audience really cared. If you've never been to Charlotte's Web you can listen to this album and share the feeling and learn the music. If you've been to Charlotte's Web this is an album that is as much by you as for you. Thank you. Enjoy it." - Stephen Powers, 1973. This album was recorded live at Charlotte's Web's First Anniversary. June of 2007, Charlotte's Web celebrated its 35th Anniversary! Thanks for the music and the magic.
Now I am compelled to write you a bit of my story…
My parents along with Stephen Powers started the music club, Charlotte’s Web in Rockford, IL in 1972. My Mom books the acts, (still), and my Dad, records them, (still). This has amassed quite an extensive collection. I started a business, snapshotmusic.com about 4 years ago with the lofty goal of digitizing, preserving, cataloguing and distributing, (with artist permission), these live concert recordings.
Recently I digitized a concert from October 5, 1977 with Mike Seeger and Elizabeth Cotten, wow the historical magic! Before that was a concert from March of 1980 featuring U. Utah Phillips opening for Doc & Merle Watson. The audience is positively exuberant! And before that, about 10 hours of Gamble Rogers.
Bill Staines just approved of the release of his concert recordings; one from 1979 is now available. Steve Goodman, John Hartford, Odetta, Tom Paxton, Holly Near, James Lee Stanley, Loudin Wainright III, Bill Miller, Claudia Schmidt, Greg Brown, Robin & Linda Williams, Tom Dundee, Kevin Locke, California Guitar Trio, Paul Winter Consort, Liam Teague, Dave Snaker Ray, John Hammond, Charlie Musselwhite, Koko Taylor, Leon Redbone, Leo Kotke, Martin Bogan & the Armstrongs, Sonny, Terry and Brownie McGhee, Mike Jordan, Jim Post, Mike & Barbara Smith, Pat Metheney, Jeff Lorber Fusion, Brubeck Bro’s, Stephane Grappelli, Randy Sabien , Bonnie Koloc, Michael Johnson, Art Thieme, Rosalie Sorrels, Bob Gibson, Henny Youngman, Ramsey Lewis, John Hiatt, John Prine, Peter Lang, Silly Wizard, Steve Young, Corky Siegel, Melvina Reynolds, Alex DeGrassi, Timothy Leary, and on and on and on…
I grew up in this magical world of music, musicians and other artists. My sister and I made food for them and made their beds and they made music.
Now it is 35+ years later, (and 15,000+ hours of live concert recordings). We continue to record the concerts that Charlotte’s Web presents as well as those presented by other local arts organizations, now digitally. In addition, and more importantly, we are digitizing and preserving the more than 25 years of great performance archives. These recordings are priceless and need to be preserved so we are transferring them from the original magnetic tape to a digital format.
In order to complete this important project, we need public support as well as financial backing. We have been spreading the word locally and now have more than 20 Charter Members. We know there are many more
people and institutions who would be interested in our archive museum. We just need to reach them.
After you have had a chance to browse our site at:
www.snapshotmusic.com, any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Peace through music.

With gratitude, Lani Richardson

One of my favorite folk albums
It's a little bit humble, and you can sense the early 70's spirit and ambition that went into this collection, but every song is a fine piece of folk music. Every song was memorable. I owned a record album and wore it out. Then wore out two tape cassettes. I was so glad that this was made available on CD after all these years. Some wonderful musicians came through Charlotte's web over the years.
