Reveiw excerpt from Music and Media Focus
Following the success of the award-nominated album “God of Drum,” Get Tribal (Kari Hohne) delivers another collection of rhythmic soundscapes centered on Shamanic drumming in her new release “Radio God.” While there are many new age recordings and world music albums, this new project by Get Tribal combines both the earthy percussive and world instrumental elements with the ambience and healing intent of new age music. “Radio God” is an alchemical blend of diverse rhythms and uplifting grooves, exploring a fusion of sound that is sensual, soul invigorating, and sure to get you moving.

I think what impresses me the most about the motivation of Get Tribal is it’s inclusiveness and the idea of crossing boundaries as described above to produce something that sounds like nothing you’ve heard before. I have great respect for Kari’s intentions in drawing from spiritual and cultural traditions from different time periods to create music for uplifting the spirit. As a relatively new recording artist, Kari Hohne, in her musical persona of Get Tribal is finding a unique voice, and exploring new ways to express it. I sense a lot of potential here, and have a feeling that future recordings will show even more of that. So I’ll definitely keep my radio tuned in to Get Tribal’s frequency.

"Radio God" is the follow-up to Get Tribal’s award-nominated 2014 debut, "God of Drum." Get Tribal is a band headed up by Kari Hohne that features various percussion instruments front and center. That isn’t to say that this music is just about drums and rhythms - there is a broad range of ethnic, traditional, and electronic instrumentation in the music and an even wider variety of musical styles that are influenced by ancient wisdom and healing customs. Hohne has worked extensively on archetypes and has studied with shamans all over the world. The compositions are centered on ethnic rhythms that inspire the same type of awakening that shamans seek. Hohne explains: “Each track is designed to awaken the energetic body, igniting consciousness with inner wisdom. We strive to create meditative openings in our music and seek to energize the emotions.” Described as “perfect for yoga and exercise,” the music was inspired by the idea that if all music, past and present, returned as sound waves from space, the melody would play as a timeless and universal message of unity: Om. Often quite hypnotic, several of the tracks just might get you up on your feet to move your whole body. At the very least, I can guarantee that toes will tap!

Each of the ten tracks on "Radio God" represents a different radio station. It begins with “GUIP: Sunrise,” which is a unique combination of Eastern European Gypsy folk and Southern Baptist Revival music. “RUAH: Breathe” is one of my favorites and is Hebrew chant set in an MGM Bible movie soundtrack tapestry. Mysterious and dramatic, this cinematic piece features keyboards (including piano), strings, and orchestral percussion telling a story that is both dark and reverent. “BEJA: Elegant Flow” is Baroque-style composition blended with easy listening 70’s music. The driving rhythm of the drums and the intensity of the strings keep this one moving - “going with the flow.” “TABA: Out of the Underworld” mixes musical influences of ancient Mesopotamia with dholak percussion and elements of 1960’s spy cinema soundtracks. Very dark and intense, the piece was inspired by the image of Imhotep’s face coming out of the sand in the movie Mummy. “Radio God: Into the Outerworld” asks the questions: “What is the music we have made with our industrial sounds and telecommunication signals?” and “What is the sound of the void we seek to transcend when looking for our reflection in the face of the One?” Driving rhythms, heavy drumming, and deep bass drones mixed with electronic sounds and instrumentation make this piece both compelling and a little bit frightening - also a favorite. “ANKH: Dancing Desert” is a mix of Middle Eastern Dervish with 1980’s disco and action soundtracks and is all about the DANCE. Bright and energetic, this one will have you grooving in your chair if you aren’t up and swirling around the room!

So, you can see that "Radio God" is a unique and very unusual listening experience! Recommended!

Review from Journeyscapes Radio
“Radio God” is Get Tribal’s follow-up to the award-nominated debut, “God of Drum”, a globally-inspired project by composer Kari Hohne. Drawing upon world mythologies and diverse cultures, as well as inspiration from music and films spanning several decades, she weaves these concepts into a blend of both ancient and modern rhythms within an electronic musical framework.

“Guip: Sunrise” opens the album with vintage keyboard sounds and digital effects that are set to a pronounced and plodding electro-drumbeat. Percussion takes center stage on this album, where a retro-urban vibe is gilded with an exotic flare, taking the listener on a journey through modern city streets, ancient roads and desert landscapes. “Ruah: Breathe” continues in this vein while picking up the pace a few notches, as Middle-Eastern flavors additionally season this steady composition, further characterized by legato strings and a minor-key piano riff. “Taba: Out of the Underworld” perhaps marks the album’s most definitive point. Inspired by the Epic of Gilgamesh of ancient Sumerian mythology, the piece begins with a windy rumble and piano loop that resurfaces throughout the tune. Bearing a slight sense of forbiddance with its distinctive tribal drums, one might easily imagine a gathering of dancers in a remote desert by firelight. “Adon: Across the Sea” is also curiously noteworthy, drawing influence from the Pacific islands with its Hawaiian and surf guitar, as a whimsical harp sample offsets the funkier rooted rhythm. The celebratory “Ankh: Dancing Desert” is another highlight which offers a fun fusion of ancient, exotic, vintage and western elements. The composition’s blending of traditional Middle-Eastern Dervish dance music with 80’s-style electronic instruments is especially well-captured here.

Uniquely venturesome and defying strict genre classification, “Radio God” is primarily about the beat where rhythm remains the focal point. Less defined by straightforward linear melodies, Kari finds an idiosyncratic motif that works within these mostly circular compositions and returns to it often, always inspiring the listener to move and groove! The album’s many retro-style elements and vintage electronic components, accentuated by culturally exotic and ancient themes, frequently bear the hallmarks of an old-world video game. An artist who possesses both rising potential and discernible passion for her work, I suspect only more intriguing and enjoyable outputs will flourish from the Get Tribal series.
