Album Notes
“This batch is for all the Honky Tonk Heroes, Keepers of the Flame, and Great Unknowns”, Fingers himself opined in the liner notes from this stellar 1996 Ripete album , and indeed the only thing missing from the project would be the scratchy clicks and hiss of stylus on vinyl. This release not only sounds old, but it would be right at home on a nice warm LP, with all its attendant (and beautiful) sonic imperfections. Taylor, most famous for his 30 + year run with the great Jimmy Buffett as harpist, shows where he actually cut his musical teeth in his younger years, by delivering an inspired and varied 16 song package of roots material superbly backed by a host of potent session veterans, including Reese Winans, Jay Spell, Jimmy Johnson, Tim Krekel and Jim Hoke. He runs the gamut, for the most part, in his approach to song selection---12 and 16 bar shuffles, swing numbers, oldies doo-wops and boogies, and even a nod to the great W. C. Handy with a rollicking interpretation of the timeless “St. Louis Blues”. He shows off his song writing skills with some true authentic Chicago and Delta blues stylings on harp, delivering each song with conviction and an obvious enthusiasm for the genre. A true highlight of the package has to be Taylor’s fabulous reading of the Mickey Jupp original , “Old Rock and Roller”, where the artist, with tongue firmly in cheek, lampoons himself, and all other icons of the rock era moving on up the proverbial ladder in age. It’s authentic barrel-house all the way, and a hoot and a half lyrically to boot.
