ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Giancarlo Maurino

A saxophone player but also a player of various different instruments, composer and arranger, he was born in Kuwait City, of Italian father and Armenian mother. He lived in Arabia until the age of 8, then moved to Italy. Self-taught, he was introduced to piano playing by his mother and then switched to flute and saxophone. Through the 70's he participated in important national jazz events such as Umbria Jazz, Ravenna Jazz, Pescara Jazz, working with several musicians among which Enrico Pierannunzi, Enrico Rava, Paolo Fresu, Phil Woods, Don Cherry, Danilo Rea, Rita Marcotulli, Giovanni Tommaso. In 1976 he recorded with Charles Mingus the soundtrack for the film "Todo modo". A much requested saxophone player, appreciated for his unusual lyrical sound and personal music language, he has recorded many soundtracks with such maestros as Armando Trovajoli, Piero Piccioni, Ennio Morricone, Riz Ortolani, Pino Donaggio and others. He was guest in pop music albums by Del Newman, Gianni Morandi, Renato Zero, Di Capri, Amii Stewart and many others. He explored many music genres, since he was always deeply committed to constant researches for new sounds. Through 1994 he carried out a great and intense schedule of concerts, as well as television appearances, in Brazil with Elza Soares and Roberto Taufic.
Since 2003 he is collaborating with Dick Halligan ( co-founder of blood, sweat & tears).
At the moment he is both involved in concert performing, and in planning and organising Music-Nature-Body related workshops, within the Jervis ski lodge located in the upper Val Pellice.
