ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Gilda Taffet, guitarist, violinist and composer, performs as a soloist and with such diverse Northern Californian groups as the Avalon Swing Revue, the Stockton Symphony, Sacramento Philharmonic, the B Street Theater and Slavic music group Dai Go Zivo.

Gilda is the recipient of two New Works Awards from the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission. The 2001 award piece, "subrosa", is scored for vocalist and solo guitar with words written by poet Victoria Dalkey. A recording with Los Angeles soprano Kerry Walsh was released in 2002.

The 1998 award work, "Downtown Diary" was featured in the Spring 2000 American Composers Forum Salon Series in San Francisco and with the Chamber Music Society in Sacramento in April, 2000. A CD of new compositions for classical guitar with various instruments including "Downtown Diary" is available at CD Baby.

As a composer, one of the longest and most satisfying collaborations has been with acclaimed dancer/choreographer Ruth Rosenberg. "Inventions", a 1998 CD release of six of the pieces written for the Ruth Rosenberg Dance Ensemble is available at CD Baby. The album includes works for various ensembles involving violin, guitar, bass and percussion.

Gilda attended California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California and received a B.A. in music from California State University Sacramento. Her guitar teachers include Jose Rey de la Torre (San Rafael, CA) and Ron Purcell. Violin instructors include Ian Swensen (S.F. Conservatory) and William Barbini (Sacramento, CA). Daniel Kingman was her composition mentor.

Barry Marcus

Spans gamut from meditative and classical to edgy and experimental.
This is a wonderful CD: Wonderfully written, arranged, played and recorded. Though classical at its core it bridges several genres including new age and jazz. It is at times melodic and meditative then edgy and experimental. Though accessable on first listening it reveals great depth and subtle surprise upon repeated listening. "Downtown Diary" is filled with rich and complex musical ideas that come straight from the heart.
