Album Notes
Talented, versatile Ginai steps up with a new CD, Jazz Island, that is a perfect showcase. If you’ve never been into jazz, this album could change your mind.

Maybe divas are not what MTV shows us. Maybe pampered 18-year-olds singing about the loves they are yet to know don’t strike a chord of truth within us. Perhaps they should taste the bitterness of life first before we trust their opinion on things.

If that is the case, then Hawaii should be proud at the final unveiling of our own local jazz diva, Ginai. On Friday, March 10, jazz aficionados island wide will finally get a chance to see what they knew all along: Ginai was meant to be one of the pre-eminent jazz solo artists in Hawaii.

The release of this album represents not just a new spin on some jazz classics, but a new lease on life for a woman who has had to battle for it her whole life.

A very nice collection. Ginai has a warm, vibrant voice and sings beautifully. She is backed by the excellent Honolulu Jazz Quartet. I especially liked Take five, Days of wine and roses, Do nothin', Whisper not. The rendition of Blue moon is wonderful.

eighty proof music (bmi)

jazz lovers of the world, listen to ginai of hawaii
trust your ears as you sample all the songs on this stellar collection. ginai is at her very best here with ten great covers and one original, backed by the award winning and highly radio played honolulu jazz quartet. we think this cd should find a place on the artist roster of a major international jazz label very soon.

Entralling, creative, world class jazz
The CD Jazz Island by Ginai represents world class jazz for any audience. Ginai effectively shows that you don’t need “original material” (there is only one original song “Jazz Island”) to create in the jazz medium. Most of the songs are old jazz standards, including the beautiful “Poor Butterfly” ( my favorite) reinterpreted by a seasoned professional who has lived the “jazz” life. Ginai, like all good jazz singers, shows she has total control of pitch (she bends her notes amd uses vibrato at appropriate times) and rhythm (she “ plays with” the beat) in producing distinctive and satisfying renditions of “Blue Moon, “ “Whisper Not,” “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Do Nothin Till You Hear From Me,” “Take Five” and “Them There Eyes”among others. This is mainstream jazz at its best and the Honolulu Jazz Quartet adds much to the overall ambience by providing top-notch classic “chamber” jazz.

Nice tracks that suggest a Hawaiian tinge (to adapt Jelly Roll Morton’s famous remark), are “Puamana/All Blues,” “Jazz Island”( a seductive tune celebrating aloha) and “Island of Make Believe.” An album full of gems puts Ginai in the company of classic women jazz vocalists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Billie Holiday. Ginai has more than a beautiful voice—she projects a total jazz experience; so buy the CD and you will be enthralled.
