ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
1) Brian’s Song

Originally a TV film, Brian's Song, and the film by the same name was a big success when it aired on ABC in 1971.

2) Once Upon a Summertime

This arrangement begins with a free section, followed by a groove with a reworked melody on top.

3) What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life

One of the first pieces I originally conceived for this project, writing a classical vignette sandwiched between the freer sections tied various ideas together.

4) Sweet Gingerbread Man

I was unfamiliar with this song until I began research for this project. I decided that the character of this song lent itself to a South African groove and I reworked the phrasing, especially in the interlude.

5) I Will Wait for You

I Will Wait for You is a song from the French film musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, part of a trilogy of movies by Jacques Demy.

6) Watch What Happens

Watch What Happens is another piece that is part of the Umbrellas of Cherbourg. This song integrates a bass part into a minimalist treatment of the melody. Gene is featured on the drums in the coda.

7) Pieces of Dreams

This arrangement begins with a descending bass line as the groove is established in the introduction.

8) The Summer Knows (Theme from Summer of ’42)

From the film, Summer of '42, this melody is retreated with changing meters and phrasing before heading into the solo section.

9) The Windmills of Your Mind

The Windmills of Your Mind is one of my favorite Michel Legrand songs. I felt that the song's asymmetrical phrasing lent itself to a calypso style, with a little mambo thrown in.

10)I Will Say Goodbye

Craig's wonderful flute sound is highlighted as he is featured here with Joe and Gene’s accompaniment.

In celebrating Michel Legrand's music, a special thanks to Craig, Joe, and Gene for their musical contributions! - Glenn Makos
