ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
It's a simple story, really:

Paul was born in a Los Angeles suburb and grew up loving the Smiths and Depeche Mode. His first instrument, however, was the accordion, lessons and instrument a generous gift from his loving, working class parents.

After being in an electronic group with (and learning much from) a certain musical genuis Darren Burgos, he had the good fortune of meeting Claude & Dania from Anything Box. They asked him to join the band right as they were signing to Epic Records.

Paul toured the world with Anything Box, but left after a few years to find his soul, his own musical voice, and to go back to school. While on this search, he worked briefly in a band called Practice Faith with Keith Milo (Keith later joined the new Cause & Effect).

Somewhere in this time, Paul put out a cassette only collection of synthpop songs called "Paul Rijnders is Dead". There's only a few of these known to exist.

Somewhere in this time also, Paul bought a guitar and performed in coffee houses in Orange County. Some of these songs and some of the synthpop demo songs (along with a few new ones) were eventually recorded on a digital 4 track and became the songs of Basura Blanca.

Sometime again, during this nebulous time, Paul was asked to go back on tour with Anything Box. Claude always being his best friend and mentor, Paul didn't hesitate to get back in Anything Box where he belonged.

It was during this recording time (Paul was renting two rooms in a house with friends - one to sleep in, one to record in) that Paul met Cheryl Kunkel. Cheryl was a goth girl that turned raver. She and her boyfriend Johan talked Paul into going to a rave. All recording stopped as Paul explored house, trance, and jungle music. Goodbye July even put out a nineteen minute four song dance medley on 12 inch on Kult Litre Records. If you see the Embrace Megamix anywhere, buy it. It's very rare now.

The plan was to put out a whole dance album called "I after E" but the party ended. The brain can only take so much going out to places like that! Paul settled in, focused, and finished Basura Blanca. And that's how we got here, boys and girls!

Not your grandmothers boring music. You must buy this album, you must buy.....
The funny thing about this album is that though the title is Basura Blanca (translates as white trash or white garbage) this album is far from being that. At a time when all the music polluting the airwaves sounds the same, the music on this album is what we need to get those airwaves bouncing up and down like a low rider. The songs are catchy and at the same time different than the garbage being played on mainstream radio today. I also like that he gave the idea behind each song, which is uncommon, but welcomed. It is to bad that the masses will never here this, because it is way to good to be played on the radio (college radio might, play it). All the songs are well written and kick butt like Hong Kong Phooey. Though I enjoyed them all, I really think that Tattooed Soul, I love you my whore, Happy, Salvation, and The only things worth opening are the absolute best songs on an album of great music (I might as well have listed all of them). Buy this album, as you will not regret it, unless of course you do not like ORIGINAL music. Perhaps he will tour to support this album on a double bill with Anything Box, his other band (check them out!) which would help expose his music to the fans of his other band, and allow those of us who have supported his music for eons to listen to it live (where are the Goodbye July t-shirts?). I look forward to the next album of brain and body hijacking music (did I mention that these are really catchy tunes?) to come out.

Nice job Paul!

Well worth the wait!
It's been several years since Paul Rijnders started working on Basura Blanca as a side project to his work with Anything Box. It has been well worth the wait. Basura Blanca is a wonderful mix of indie-rock and synth-pop. It reflects Rijnder's electronic background fused with his growing interests in guitar. The songs range from upbeat dance tunes to soft, emotional ballads. The album covers a whole range of emotions. Several songs emphasize Rijnder's unique wit and humor while others are touching and emotional. The very personal Christmas time song, The Only Things Worth Opening, is quite possibly his best work ever. Many of the songs date back to old recordings and the production has retained its raw feel, integrity and honesty. The songs are presented as they were created, with just minor production adjustments. The general mix of emotions and themes should appeal to a wide audience and not just fans from Rijnder's work with Anything Box.
