Night At The Hoppera

by The Grasshoppers

The Great NYC 90's Rock band often imitated but never equaled. Beatlesque, Badfinger and The Band are often used to describe the exciting music by songwriters Joachim and Appleton. The Classic Rock Opera was the last album of The Grasshoppers.

Album Notes
The Grasshoppers were one of the most influential and melodic rock / pop bands on the New York scene in the mid 90's. Their live shows were legendary and they could party with the best of them. Each member brought their own unique musical ability, unsurpassed by their peers. Their legacy continues today. Their last album "Night At The Hoppera", recently sold on Ebay for $100 dollars. Filled with songs about Midnight Callers, Blonde Bikers, Peeping Tom’s, Magdelena Evercloud, Apocalyptic Whale chants, sonic blues riffs, Mystical Magic, and the power of love, all fine tuned into a dynamic pop rock collage. Now re-mastered “Night At The Hoppera” is finally available with it’s one of a kind album art and is offered here on CD Baby.

In 1991, after playing together and separately for several years in groups such as The Electric Jellyfish, The Stepbrothers, and The Dreyer Brothers, Marco formed The Grasshoppers along with fellow New York musicians Jason Appleton David Hamburger and Rich Pagano. Subsequently, Jason, Marco, and David penned the songs for their debut self-titled CD, released on Smile Records. After the release of their first album, drummer Rich Pagano left the band to pursue a producing career that included the Grasshoppers second album “American Van”. Rich was replaced by long time New York rock scene staple Chris Wilford. The Grasshoppers second album will be re-released shortly and is already a collector’s item having been almost impossible to find for years. "American Van” is another concept album about a band with a remote recording unit in their van. All the songs were recorded while touring across America. The album featured the Grasshoppers trademark sound, reminiscent of the Beatles and The Band.

The Grasshoppers rigorous touring schedule and original brand of '70s influenced rock earned them a devoted following and the attention of major record labels. They were one the first rock groups to write and perform Jingles as a band, performing on such well known campaigns as Diet Coke, 7 Up, Toyota, Tropicana and Long John Silver’s among others. Subsequently they were featured in an article about rock and roll jingles in New York Magazine (“Jingle All The Way” by Chris Norris, Dec 16 1996).

Many luminaries of the business could be seen catching Hopper’ shows, from Paul McCartney to Joan Osborne, Jeff Buckley and even the world famous classical conductor Seji Ozowa. While opening for Ritchie Havens at the 1994 Woodstock reunion in Bethel NY, the Grashoppers stunned the audience with an electrifying, thunderously loud, powerful performance. The bands closing numbers united the crowd of thousands, bringing them to their feet as they swayed to the Hoppers’ classic rock anthems. Sadly, some great footage was shot of the show, only to be stolen by a roadie some years later. Who knows, maybe someday it will turn up on YouTube!

MARCO JOACHIM: LEAD VOCAL, GUITAR, PIANO. At 9 years old while growing up in New York City, Marco met John Lennon and was inspired to become a musician and songwriter. Marco today enjoys a successful solo career and has opened for B. B. King and performed at the Kennedy Center as well as touring with a Woody Guthrie Multi-Media show called “American Journey”. His recent album “Changing Times” has been compared to early Bob Dylan by Singout Magazine and is played on over 100 radio stations across America. Changing Times is currently available on I-Tunes and CD Baby. Marco is the cousin of folk legend Ramblin' Jack Elliot. You can check out his website at -

JASON APPLETON: LEAD VOCAL, GUITAR. Prior to the band's formation, Jason worked with producer Mike Thorne engineering acts such as Peter Murphy, Ashford & Simpson, and Betty while playing the New York City club scene. One can see JJ Appleton today as an accomplished solo performer and songwriter. He has recorded 2 albums, “500 Moments” and the recently released “Uphill to Purgatory”, both available on I-Tunes and CD Baby. You can also check out his website -

DAVID HAMBURGER: BASS, VOCALS. Nicknamed "The White Owl" for his bass wisdom was a staple in the New York rock and funk scene for several years. David's bass playing displays shades of Joco Pastorius, McCartney, and Rick Danko. It was David who penned the name of the group "The Grasshoppers". David also wrote several great songs for The Grasshoppers including "Come Back to Me Now" and co-wrote many others. He performed on sessions with Johnny Sandlin for Capricorn Records and "Sample This" for Elektra Records. Dave is also featured playing with Popa Chubby on the DVD “Popa Chubby – In Concert” recorded from the famed “Ohne Filter” show from Germany (INAK 6513-1 DVD). He has opened shows for Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors, Johnny Winter, Steel Pulse and Etta James. David is currently busy raising his two boy’s, Dylan and Miles with his beautiful wife Colleen.

CHRIS WILFORD: DRUMS, PERCUSSION. Chris's drumming was a big part of The Grasshoppers sound. Often compared to The Who's Keith Moon, Chris was a hard rock kind of drummer with admittedly “heavy hands”. Oddly his drum style matched perfectly with The Hoppers sound. After playing with numerous bands around New York, Chris toured with Billy Idol's guitarist Steve Stevens. Between doing spot gigs with members of Blues Traveler Chris spent a lot of time in pool halls, fancying himself as a bit of a hustler, often taking his cue from the ghost of Minnesota Fats. Chris is now one of the top wine experts in New York but still plays an occasional gig.
